Default Rattling Roof

Is anyone else experiencing an obnoxiously loud rattling noise coming from inside the roof of their Charger (around the area of the driver-side sun visor)?

I started noticing this about 2 months ago and it has been getting progressively worse. It happens most when traveling between 55 and 100 km/h. It is at the point where I can't stand driving without having music on to deaden the noise. I'm taking my car into the dealer on Tuesday to get my slotted rotors installed, so I thought I might get it checked out then. However, if all goes as it normally does at the dealership, they will just tell me I'm hearing things or some other b.s. Therefore, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had a rattle about there for a little while. Sounded like it was in the sun roof. It went away fefore I could get back past the dealer.

Did you notice that it happened only during certain temperature conditions?

Cooler might make sence because the metal shrinks. However, my short experience was in the summer. Sorry I couldn't be of more help....

I have the same problem. Just noticed it the other day. I don't know what it is yet.

You can get a free set of slotted rotors installed on your SRT-8 if you go in and complain about rotor grooving/brake squealing. It's all under warranty!

TSB# 05-006-06

These rotors stop far more consistently and have virtually no squealing associated with them. A must have for all SRT drivers.

I have the rattling roof too. If you put pressure on the roof liner between the driver window and sun roof, the rattle goes away. The rattle is temperature sensitive. I live in Phoenix and it only rattles below about 70F. Dartman69, any update on if the dealer fixed it? Did they screw anything up taking apart the liner? Thanks.

Update: After searching through the official Chrysler TSBs, I believe that I have found what may be causing my rattling sunroof! http://www.wkjeeps.com/misc/LX/TSB/TSB_2300206.pdf

Last week, after printing off this helpful service bulletin, I was off to my Friendly (yet incompetent) Local Dodge Dealer. Once I was done receiving the "deer caught in headlights" stare from the shop foreman brought about my reading to him of the TSB, I left the building thinking my car was safe in their hands. Wrong!

Upon returning, I was reassured by my friend the shop foreman that the "problem had been fixed" and I proceded to the service desk to sign the release form. Before signing the form though, I quickly glanced over the work order, and was swiftly thrown aback by what I had read. Instead of following the outlined procedure that the TSB layed out (involving the torqueing of glass fasteners), the mechanics decided that they had a better idea- replace the entire headliner!!! Yes, these incompetent morons decided against what Chrysler's finest engineers had written and replaced my entire roof for no apparent reason!

To make things worse, I read further on down the work order and found that these "flailing handitards" also re-replaced my passenger-side 6x9. You see, I had taken my car in 2 months ago to have a popping/cut-out noise remedied in regards to my speaker system. Though I had known in advance that it was an amplifier setting, not a blown speaker (I have many knowledgeable, car-audio specialists as friends) causing this problem and told the mechanics of this, they insisted on replacing the speaker under the guise that I keep the bass set at 10 (though it only goes to 9) on the EQ and blew the speaker via abuse. All the car needs is a simple reflash of the amplifier and the problem would be history! Unfortunately, being the helpful guys that they are, the mechanics decided that "just for the helluvit", they'd needlessly replace this speaker one more time.

Needless to say, I was outraged! It didn't help matters either that the two cocky, know-nothing-about-cars, service "wenches" gave me attitude and spoke to me in that tone that Mr. Rogers would use to address a 10-year old, quadrapalegic boy! I was blatantly accused of bringing my car in to get TSBs performed which don't apply to me and that the mechanics did what they did because it was all in the TSBs. "The TSB's you get at home are different from the ones we have" stated one of the service yuppies before I pulled out the official, Chrysler-stamped documents that were folded in my back pocket. After reading through both applicable bulletins and clarifying that no-such procedures existed therein, I signed "FU@% YOU!" accross the front page of my bill, tore the document in two, stomped on it, and stormed out the door. I was not a happy camper.

After fogging up the windows in my car curtesty of my fuming rage, I very calmly drove off to a competing Dodge dealer with whom I had dealt with in the past and was impressed with. Once I had explained the incident I endured to the very polite and understanding service person in charge there, she called the head mechanic to come have a look at my car. To my joy, the mechanic promptly arrived on the spot with a copy in hand of the very same TSB I had in my back pocket. After inspecting my car and verifying that this indeed was the problem, he escorted me back to the service desk to schedule an appointment for the 27th of October to have my car properly repaired...and to have my amp reflashed!

I will get back to you after the 27th!

I see others are experiencing the joys of a rattling roof. I also like you description of friendly buy incompetent. Besides my roof problems, I have had dash rattles, brake squealing, a trunk lid wearing the paint off my rear bumper, wheel bearing requiring replacement, a heater control unit that was replaced, trim pieces from around gear shift that had to be replaced, and am on my third set of brakes (50,000 km or 30,000 miles on car) Will go into detail with those problems elsewhere but for now, I’ll stick to the roof liner and sun/moon roof. My dodge dealer has attempted 7 or 8 times now to fix the problem but still rattling away. You were correct though with your fix for the sunroof.
The brackets securing the sunroof to the car were only hand tightened and created a very annoying noise. Once properly tightened, that problem has not returned. … yet!
What they have not been able to fix yet though is the roof liner itself. It starts even before I leave my driveway. The first rattle starts as soon I close my door. The air pressure caused by the door closing rattles the liner. While driving, almost all smaller bumps causes a vibration coming from the center of the liner almost over the back seats. I was told there was a “fix” for the problem but it is not fixed. I am at the point where they have given up on trying to fix the problem. I was told the space where the rattle is has to be there to accommodate the sunroof cover??? Did not really make sense to me. I will be demanding that it be repaired next week when I bring the car in to replace the complete dash grill in an attempt to solve the dash rattles.
Will keep you informed of my progress.
