Duster 318 swap
Hey guys, Im new to this side of the forum,(usally on the truck side ). I have found a 75 Duster with the slant six that I am going to pick up for $100. I want to restore it to look like the Duster 340 or the twister. I plan on putting in a 318, just because I can pick one up cheap. I had seen that schumacher sells engine mount swap kits so you can bolt the 318 in. Has anyone done this swap. I would sure appreciate some info on this. Can you use the slant six's tranny or is it too weak? On what little info I could find you have to shorten the drive shaft also. Thats not a big problem, I've done that on a jeep 350 v8 swap. Thanks!
You cannot use the /6 trans, the bolt pattern is different, you ned a SB trans. Try to find a complete drive train from a rot bucket, and you will have everything you need including the wiring harness (unless you enjoy splicing wires to add length).
Thanks, I know where theres a volare that I think has the 318 in it. I also think I have found a 340 duster. It doesnt have the motor in it, but if its a 340 car it would have the correct motor mounts torsion bars rear end, ect. along with the rally guages and buckets. Im trying to find the owner.
Well, the 340 duster fell through. Sounds like there has been many people before me that tried to buy the car. Doesnt want to sell it. The guy would rather let it sit there and rot away. Another question I had on swapping in the 318 to a six cyl. car...Do you need to change the torsion bars? Was wondering if the 318 would be too heavy?
I was going to check on when I could haul the 100 $ duster home the other day and decided to take another gravel road, when I came across a bunch of junk cars in a field about 5 miles from our house. I asked if he had any dusters and he told me there were a couple over the hill. I walked back and found one of them and looked inside. I couldnt believe it, but I was looking at the rally guages with the 150mph speedo! The car has what looks like the 340, disk front brakes, auto trans. He wants $500 for it. It needs a windshield, interior a fender and hood, along with sheetmetal here and there ( Iowa winters ).As soon as I get the $ together Im gonna haul it home. Was pretty exicted to find it.I knew you guys would understand.
Check the V.I.N. a true 340 car will start with VS29H.If it is real, it'll be a '70 or '71 with the Ralley gauges. $500.00 is a steal, keep the secret location to yourself till you get it home!

Thanks for the info. I should have written down the vin. It's deffinately a 70 or 71 by the tail lights. The ralley guages are what made me think it was a true 340.That and the front disc brakes. I'll check the vin next time I go out.
