TPMS affect gas mileage?
My daughter has a 2008 Avenger with the 2.4 (K), 106K on it. The gas mileage is around 16 MPG. The TPMS light has been on for a month or so. The pressures are OK but, between school/work, she hasn't taken the car to have the sensors checked. We know the the light being on is creating some issues with the remote entry. Does it play havoc with gas mileage also ?? From what I can see the air filter and spark plugs are the only tune-up. Am I missing something ??
Thanks in advance
Thanks in advance
you are right, there isn't anything to do other than Air Filter and spark plugs.
Perhaps it is just her driving habit? how does she drive?(when you are not around).
maybe you should drive it a few days urself.
and how do you calculate the fuel economy?
supposely, you fill up the tank until gas nozzle clicks, reset Trip meter. Drive your car until you need another fill up. Gas up the tank until nozzle clicks off again, now read the pump. and Divide the Trip Meter number by Gallons you filled up.

Sounds like two unrelated issues ...
The TPMS monitors air pressure in the tires (you say it's correct) unless the tires are low that could affect miles...
That should also have NOTHING to do with the remote ...
I'm guessing you have an engine issue causing a drop in mileage (Bad O2 sensor ect )

The tire pressures have been checked a couple of times and are at a couple PSI above recommended pressure to make sure we didn't have a low pressure situation. The idiot light will flash for a few minutes then stay on steady. From other posts, that is an indication of a bad sensor. They also say that the remote sensor is used to locate and verify the pressures on the sensors in the tires. So I guess I was wondering if the computer adjustments might be doing something to compensate for the percieved soft tire.
I filled the tank and know the amounts that were put in before I had to fill it again. 591 miles on 36 gallons
I've ridden with her a few times resently. She does tend to pound the accelerator on take off and brake late. We've been dealing with that style of driving for the 4 years she's been driving, so I would expect a little lower than the 24 estimated all around, but 16+ even seems low for a 4 cylinder. Her commute to work is 35 miles 50/50 highway and city driving.
I put plugs and a new filter in this morning. No SEL to indicate a sensor issue, I'll have to see if I can get it on an analyzer, as supporting her gas bill is going to bury me, if the tune up doesn't make a difference ..
Thanks for the toughts and advice.

That type of driving style is really really bad for fuel economy. and take into consideration at where you live as well.
When I drove like that in 50/50 city and highway in metropolitan city, I got like 21 mpg on my 06 Toyota corolla, 1.8L engine.
I am currently driving 80% highway, I get around 32 MPG.
And Generally, even with a grandma driving style, Avenger still doesn't break 30 MPG.
I think the problem with with her driving style. You should consider swapping car with her and see if ur driving habit can get u above 25+ MPG.

Bdozer,
I agree with the others that the TPMS light and the mileage are most likely not related, especially if the tire pressures are all up to snuff. Since you just recently replaced plugs and air filter I will be curious for you to post the new MPG's. Keep us posted.
Sorry for the lack of response. I've filled my daughters car a few times, so she could refill it when she got her pay check. Of course she hasn't, so I still don't have the current MPG on the car. If I ever get it, I will post it .. Thanks again for all the previous help
