96 caravan drivin me crazy!!
r u ready? 96 gc 3.8L, is dying after driving for abt 5 miles, abt a week ago it wouldn't restart for a while but now after replacing crankshaft & camshaft sensor, removed catalyic convertor,( because it heated up and melted down the "honeycomb" inside), map sensor, coil pack, alternator...whew, i think that's it in the past few days. it sounds better but it's still dying after abt 5 miles restarts after abt 5 mins now. the map sensor was the last thing replaced, the engine light hasn't been on since then and no codes either...so, could it be a major computer prob or something really simple that's being overlooked?
Looks like they said "check engine light hasn't been on". The only true way to determine this problem would be with a real scanner reading data. I've replaced several broken flex plates that caused a similar problem however that's only a guess and probably not your issue. Again, without sufficent data, it's all a guess.
Yes i know. If you are having same problems as before, Then you may want to take the van to shop that can scanner it and maybe fix it. It could be a bad flex plate. Can you remove the transmission just inspect it? That why you may need a shop to find out what is going on. Could also be a wiring problem?
the ck eng light was on coded for cam sen, changed it. then on again, coded for crank sen, chngd it. on again, high volt code, new alternator. on again, can't remember code, changed coil pk. ran until died & cat conv was red hot, took it off, ran again, died again, eng light back on, coded map sen, changed it. sounds better, still dies, no eng light now. what would be an easy way to check PCM.
Sure it 'could' be. What other parts should we guess it could be? the only reason I 'guessed' the flex plate is that is very common to cause the cat to fail and melt down due to improper ignition timing. and when the van is cold the timing and fuel strategies are different than when it's warmed up after 5min run time... so it COULD be common flex plate. But it's all speculation until YOU provide enough information to come to a definite conclusion
