Serpentine Belt 1999 2.4L Caravan
Hello all. I have searched all over, and I find plenty of people talking about how to change the Accessory Belt on 3.0L and others. But very few if anything about how to go about changing the belts on a 2.4L. I see that I have a separate belt for the Power steering pump.
What is the procedure for changing them? Do I loosen the Alternator? Or is there are tensioner that I have to release? I found the routing pattern, but no direction how to get them on/Off.
Also what do you recommend the change interval be?
Thank you for your assistance?

You are corrrect. Loosen the top alternator bolt and it should slide in the slot and allow enough slack in the belt to remove it.
The PS belt should come off the same way.
Proper belt tention, place a straight edge (ruler) across the crank and alternator pulley.
Push down on the belt and it should only strech about 1/2 an inch or so below the straight edge.
When to change it out? The belt will tell you when it's time.
Check it for cracks and dry rot, or if its squeeles when cold.
I replace mine every three years. Just because it's a pretty silly reason to be stranded along side the road.
Furthermore, If it snaps and you continue to drive, overheating and death to your engine is the standard result.
I keep a spare serp belt and the tools to change it in with my jack, just incase.
More info is in the Chilton's or Haynes manual (a must have) or free at autozone.com.
Good Luck,
