Default Speedometer sticks?

I have a 05 GCV, 3.8. The speedometer sticks when I speed up or let off the gas, like if I had the cruise set at 65 and stepped on the gas the indicator will stay at 65 but I am going faster. And the same, if I turn off the cruise and start to slow down the indictor will stay at 65 until at about 55 to 60 it starts to move. Would this be the auto trans speed senors, there are 2, input and output. Autozone has both input and output, but also has a speed sensor made by Edelbrock. Dodge parts online only has a Vehicle speed sensor w/4 speed trans. Can someone please help me with this. Thanks

it's absolutely NOT going to be an input speed sensor. the only way to determine this problem is to use a real scanner and see what the computer sees. analyze the data: if the computer is showing a speed different than the speedometer, then the chances are pretty good the speedometer is defective.

sure, just toss one of those in and you'll find you have the same problem. if the output speed sensor was acting up, you'd have all kinds of transmissio shifting issues which you did not state you had.

No shifting issues, Can this be scanned with a code reading scanner, or take it to the dealer?

Try running the cluster self test and see if the needle sticks during the sweep. If it does, then it needs the cluster replaced.

To activate the Self-Diagnostic program:
  1. With the ignition switch in the OFF position, depress the TRIP ODOMETER RESET button.
  2. Continue to hold the TRIP ODOMETER RESET button until Sof </B>and a number (software version number (i.e. Sof 3.2</B>) appears in the odometer window then release the button. If a fault code is present, the cluster will display it in the odometer display. When all fault codes have been displayed, the cluster will display “end” </B>in the odometer display. Refer to the INSTRUMENT CLUSTER DTC'S table to determine what each trouble code means.

hey, that's great procedure for retrieving PCM codes but how does he get TCM codes and data?

No don't have to go to the dealer. ANY competent shop would have a scanner capable of reading transmission related codes and data. heck every highschool autoshop would even have the capacity to do this

Tizzy1, thanks for the reply. I did the cluster check by holding the trip button in and what came up is," Sof 7.5"," E code", and then" E end". Then the entire cluster goes through a test and all kind of numbers are in the odmeter area. The "E code" is that the problem?

When the cluster goes into self test, it should sweep the speedometer. Watch the sweep and make sure the needle move smoothly. If it is jerky then you could have a cluster issue. It should sweep from 0-20, 20-60, 60-100 mph and then back to 0. If nothing was listed after E code then there were no codes. the codes are like 100.0, 100.2, 200.2, etc.

Ok I watched the needle move smoothly to about 100 and then it did very little jerking or studder up to 115. After that it was very smooth through out the test moving all around.
