Default Intermittent blower motor function

2003 Grand Caravan with electronic climate control. The front blower motor fan started to come on when ever it wants. Once it comes on it stays on. When it works, all of the different speeds work as well. Rear fan always works.

It may have started after a recent rain, can't stay for sure. Nor do I know if there would be a relationship there.

next time it doesn't work, give it a smack and see if it starts up. The blower is down in the passenger foot well. Water enters the hvac housing from the fresh air intake and it gets into the blower motor and the bushing start to get stiff. Might be time for a new blower motor.

Did that. I have to do that to my old 98 sometimes, so I knew the trick. It has no effect.

In the case of the 03, the fan works most of the time. Even when it doesn't work it will typically turn on within a minute or less.

I don't know about the 03, but replacing the blower motor on the 98 T&C looked very difficult.

Do you have a procedure for changing it on the 03 Grand Caravan and for a 98 T&C?

Welcome to DF
it could be the blower resistor. I believe the resistor is on the bulk head/firewall.

DrDave, I have a write up on the '03 somewhere on this forum with all the cool shortcuts. Here's the r and r for the '98.

BLOWER MOTOR AND WHEEL ASSEMBLY

REMOVAL
  1. Remove glove box. Refer to Instrument Panel and Systems.
  2. Remove (4) hex head screws to blower motor cover
  3. Disconnect blower motor wiring.
  4. Remove grommet for wiring. Feed wiring through blower housing
  5. Remove mounting screws for blower motor
  6. Allow the blower assembly to drop down, and remove assembly from vehicle.
INSTALLATION

For installation, reverse the above procedures.

Man, that sounds easy. If only you didn't have to take off the dash or cut out a bunch of insulation to get to the back screw.

I also read that you can remove the screws from inside the engine compartment that attaches the entire heater assemble, giving enough room to tilt the unit to get to the last screw.

I guess I don't know if you have the back screw issue with the '98, it's been so long since I've done one but you do with the '03. We just break the tab on the newer one's and omit the rear screw.

Customer pay labor time for a '98 caravan in 0.6 hrs. It can't be too bad.

Thanks for the info !! I was able to take out blower motor without problem. It was stiff to turn so I suspected the bearing / bushing was dry.

My DIY for this problem ...

Drill a small hole in the bottom of the motor (where the bearing is ) carefull not to get any scarf in there ... Hold it upside down and drill up so metal shavings fall down .. and brush away others

Then add oil in the hole .. not too much so that oil gets on the motor windings. Patch the hole with duct tape to seal out dust if you like or leave it open to add more oil if blower acts up again.

Attach a 12v ( at least 2amps) source to the motor terminals .. if it doesnt turn your motor maybe toast

In my case motor is great !!

Final test .. hook up motor blower to all connections .. turn ignition key .. turn blower control .. if blower blows faster with each turn of the control switch you should be golden ....

However this "repair" may not last a really long time but you can always add more oil !!

I am going to drill a hole in the housing and epoxy a tube so I can access the blower motor hole (that I made) -- just in case I want to add more oil !!
