so my 91 caravan lost 3rd gear out of the blue it has new input and output sensors. Ive had 5 caravans and this is weird. i was doing 60 on the freeway and it down shifted hard and then no 3rd gear.

 

I can fix it for you. how far are you from central part of the state?

describe how it works from starting.... shift 1-2 then goes to neutral or does it do a fast 1-2 almost instantly then no further attempts to 3. need more detail

is this a 3 speed or overdrive trans. what engine?

 

well it shift normal thru 1-2 then does not shift and i can fix it. i am looking for some info so i can have a good idea were to start

 

EXPLAIN, in more detail, what your shift if doing!

the symptoms for what I think could be the problem is: it starts in 1 shifts to 2 fine and normal not early and is dependent on load/throttle position.... meaning that if you took off WOT (wide open throttle) the 1-2 shift would be at higher rpm than if you had light throttle. if this is the case, then the 2-3 shift would flair like in neutral then drop back to 2nd and quit trying (Limp-in). but I'm having a tough time determining the EXACT problem without more detail!!

 

Here is what maybe going on.If the fluid is good,then you have a broken hub/with shaft.The transmission would need to come apart and repair. This was a common problem on the early 4 speeds.

 

it goes 1 then 2 and never in to 3rd could it be the shift solenoid ive been reading up on this type of problem. and it was like it down shifted when it happened. no weird noises or metal in the fluid and ive got a 1990 parts van with a good trans.but that would be alot of work

 

you could bring it to someone with diagnostic skills, a scanner and many years rebuilding this trans.

IDK how far you are from Adams but I can put you in touch with a guy that is probably one of the best 604 trans guys I ever met.

 

im in oak creek and well its a beater with a heater and i was going to hope it would be a reasonably not crazy fix. I think im just going to strip it for parts for one of my our vans and call it a day. but thanks for all the info guys its a big help .
