Default 97 Caravan with MIL code 11

Vehicle will cut out and maybe die. Check engine light is on. Shows only mil code 11. Was cutting out after driving for 30 min, now all the time. I have to put tran in neutral when I stop. Rev to 1500 rpm and then shift to drive. Sometimes vehicle can not be restarted after it dies. Engine runs fine only when accelerating or in park/neutral. I changed cam and crank sensors and coil pack. Same thing. Took it to a shop and they did the same. Have also replaced the PCM. Any ideas?

find a better shop that doesn't throw parts at it and actually uses diagnostic skills to problem solve.

I suspect broken flex plate.

Welcome to DF
Code 11 is the same as P1391 loss of crank or cam signal. I agree the flex plate could be the cause.

Ok. I answered my own question. Flywheel. The shop I took it to used a camera to visibly check the flywheel (I think) through the crankshaft posn sensor hole. No cracks or problems seen. I actually watched this being done. Btw, now it takes a long time to get to operating temp.

OMG that'll NEVER work there's no possible way to see a cracked flex plate without removing the trans and in some cases you even need to remove all the bolts an pull off the reinforcement ring to see if it cracked.

but if they were actually 'quality' mechanics, they would use an oscilloscope to determine if the plate cracked.

Ok. This is a new one on me. Never had a problem like this before. How does the cracked flex plate manifest on an oscilloscope?

of course you never had a problem like this, you wouldn't be asking a question as you'd already be familiar with cause and effect of this problem

cam and crank sensors don't line up

The flex plate has square holes and the crank sensor is a magnet, when the holes goes pass the sensor it breaks the magnetnic field and give dc voltage. Thats why we use an osilloscope. The way you should think how it works is like this. Your timing chain has two marks that need to line up or the engine will be out of time,2nd the crankshaft have offsetting hole and the flex plate bolts to the crankshaft only one way.the square holes pre cut to match the engine timing. If the flex plate cracks, the engine will no longer be in time. The controller takes a picture when the square hole goes pass the sensor(osilloscope) and the controller doesn't see the sensor breaking the magnetnic field. Then you get the P1391 code loss of crank or cam.

Ok. I understand the concept now. BTW the o scope at the shop I took it to was broken at the time. That was why they visually inspected the flex plate/fly wheel. If it checks out ok on the o scope, what then may be wrong?
