Default '97 Grand Caravan antilock brakes activating

I just bought a Grand Caravan and it has a problem with the brakes. They act completely normal and the pedal is firm at all operating speeds EXCEPT right before I come to a complete stop. As I am slowing down, from about 3 mph to a stop, the antilock brakes activate. As I said, the brakes operate normally at all other speeds. Any ideas???

really the only way to trouble shoot this is to get a scanner on it and see what the computer is seeing that would trigger this issue. maybe you have a speed sensor thats dropping off tricking the computer to think you have lockup. but that's purely a speculative guess.

Ok. I took it by the auto parts store and borrowed their reader. Nothing came up. They said it's probably because the check engine didn't come on. Only the ABS light is on. They said the reader that the dealer has may show some info. Unfortunately I'm sure that'll cost me!

auto parts store? I don't know of any that can scan abs the are only doing check engine light.

did you not read what I said about a SCANNER. code readers can't see the speed sensor out put!

I keep wondering why everyone seem to think that every problem needs to go to a dealer. there are A LOT of great independent shops that can fix anything. Heck I have a cheap scanner that can read ABS data on just about any car along with trans data, engine data and body computer data along with codes from all. DATA is crucial to identifying the problem. just because there's a code doesn't mean tossing a part at it fixes the problem.

Ck the sensors at the wheels, a loose bolt on the sensor will cause the same problem. As long as the ABS lite is not on.

Thanks Master Tech. I did check all the sensors and they are all tight. Sapporo, I first of all didn't know that there are scanners AND readers, and second of all that there is a difference between the two. Sounds like I will have to go to a mechanic as you say.
