Default 03 van transmission issue

Hi

I live in Barrie, Ontario. A few months ago my engine management light came on. After a few hours it went off. Then last week it came on again. Now it stays on whenever I start the car. What's weird is if I drive the car it won't change gear. I pull over, put the car in park. Switch the engine off and restart it. Then driving away is like normal. Just the light stays on.

We don't have an autozone here and I'm broke so any ideas on a cheap DIY fix would be enormously appreciated.

Cheers

Beanie

Hey Mr. Bean. I have an 04' which I bought 2 months ago and I have a shudder from 1st to 2nd. My friend which works at Woodstock Chrysler says he remembers re-flashing alot of these vans for shifting in the TCM. Maybe it needs to be reflashed or something in the valve body sticking. You could try a bottle of lucas transmission additive which might help your shifting. Good luck

Welcome to DF
The next time your engine lite comes on. Take it to the dealer and have them scan it. do not turn the off. You want to know what the active code is.

had the same problem on my 94 turned out to be the solenoid pack. what prompted me to be looking at that was the prob would reset when you turned off the van. wich makes me think something electrical not mechanical.

unsure if the 03 would suffer the same.

I would agree with you,it maybe electrical. But without the trans acting up, we are just guessing.

Finally managed to get the car in. I need a new TCM(Transmission Control Module). Apperently the one on the car now is badly corroded and needs to be changed out. Next questions :-

1) Is this likely to be a dealer part. If so any idea on cost?
2) Where on the car do I find this thing.

I am mechanically inclined so have no real issue trying this out as a self repair.

Cheers

You can replace it,but the dealer may have to program it.

you can get at local parts store but they will need info on your van and mostlikely need to be ordered in. at at wreckers you will need to pull one of an exact van like yours
as for cost hope you done your christmas shopping already or the kiddies will be pretty sad on the 25th. they aren't cheap so u may want a 2nd opinion before you throw good money away.

pull off the shield inside drivers front wheelwell
