Default Fuel gauge stops working at 1/4 - 1/2 tank.

I have a 2006 Grand Caravan SXT and recently my wife called me from the side of the road stating that the van died. I asked her if she ran out of fuel and she said no because the gauge read just under 1/4 tank and the overhead display showed she had over 50 miles left.

I showed up with 2.5 gallons of fuel and it started right up and the dash was showing over 1/4 of a tank and the overhead dash showed there were about 120 miles left in the tank.

I live in MN and running out of fuel in the winter is not much of an option with 2 littles ones on board. What could be going wrong and how can I fix it?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

You may have a bad sending unit/float. Or the gauge is out of calibration.

How would one go about diagnosing which one it is without tearing out the gas tank?
