I guess she somehow interrupted the test - I did exactly what it says there and got the colourful light show and now everything is pointing where it should.

What exactly did you do? Hold in the odometer button, insert key and switch ON?
My wife just phoned me from the gas station - she was trying to reset the trip with the van off and now the odometer, speedometer and tach dont' work?!?!? The van did start and she was able to drive home no problem. She was suitably worried because we know the PCM has a P0601 internal fault code in it.
