Default water pumps keep leaking

I got a 98 plymouth Grand Voyager with the 3.3 engine, I think the mileage is about 170,000. I've had the van since new. The first water pump went to about 90,000 miles and then the front seal on it started leaking slowly, basically only when stopped from all appearances. Since that time each replacement pump has lasted only about 40,000 miles before the front seal goes again. Again seemingly only when the van is sitting. If there is a change in the barometric pressure, like a storm comes thru leaks worse. What could be taking out the seals???? thanks in advance, and I don't know why I didn't ask before now!!

There are a few places it could be leaking from, 1 timing cover seals, 2 hose clamps on the hoses, 3 the 5/8 heater hose or the head gaskets/intake.

Thanks for the help. I'll double check those areas again. But what doesn't make since is change the pump leak goes away. Then at about the 40,000 mile mark leak comes back???? What would take out the pump seal???

Crappy design? Water pumps have and still are an issue with the minivans. My 03 has 130K and is on pump 3. They seem to leak more cold than hot and more in the winter than summer. Not sure why but irritating to say the least.

Ouch!!, you know now that you mention it, I think mine does the same. For sure everytime the barometer falls and if the van has been driven, it's going to leak when the engine cools down. Is there an additive one could put in the coolant to help slow this down????

You can, But you will find that additive cause more problems later on the cooling system.
