Default Transmission on 1995 drops out of gear

On my 1995 caravan with a 3L will go into gear when move frompark to drive. Then you drive about 100 yards and it drops out of gear. and wont go back in until you shut the engine off. The it does the same thing again. Any ideas?

Welcome to DF
Does you van have a 3 speed transmission or the 4 speed? If you have a 3 speed, disconnect the kick down lever at the transmission and drive. If the transmission doesn't drop out of gear. Then the problem is the kick down shaft on the valve body. Its frozen. Thats what it kicks you out of gear. The fix is to replace the valve body.

How can you tell if it is a 3 speed or 4 speed? And where is the kickdown lever located. I can't find it in my book. Thanks for the help.

If you look down inside the engine compartment at the transmission. Do you see a large square box bolted to the transmission with a 8 pin wire connector? That would be a 4 speed transmission or a O around the D for overdrive.

Then I would say your transmission is going into limp in. You need to have the stored codes removed from the TCM and post.

Anyway to get the codes without taking it to the shop. I live in the woods and it will not move but 100 to 200 yards at a time and I don't want to tow it. Money is short. I appreciate all your help.

Not really, You need a scanner that can read the TCM. You can driving the van just in low gear. But that may not last very long. Or replace the transmission without knowing what is wrong with yours.

The thing is it wont stay in gear. It only staysin gear for 100 to 200 yards then pops out of gear and you have to turn the car off then on to get it to move again. It is not going into limp mode. I have had 5 of 94 to 96 caravan/voyager and have had problems with limp mode. This is not limp mode. So I guess I'll either junk it or get a new transmission.
