Default 2000 Grand Caravan 3.8 Loud catalytic converter

I was just wondering if the loud noise coming from my catalytic converter means that it needs to be replaced or if it can just be "cleaned"? The check engine light is not on, but I've been told that the converter needs to be replaced and i'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

It's a loud rumble. It's not rattling. When i took it for vehicle inspection, it failed due to exhaust, but that's all it said. They didn't really say what was wrong with it.

It sounds almost as loud as a harley ... lol. I'm also thinking that THIS could be the cause of the van guzzling gas because it's afraid that it'll never get it again...lol.

Someone had told me that it sounds "clogged". That's why I thought maybe "cleaning" it would work.

If it sounds like it plugged, Then you need to replace it. Cat converter can't be cleaned.
