Default Have you tried freezing bolts to remove?

Going to remove 06 caravan water pump bolts. Thought about freezing them with loctite freeze (-43 degrees) to try to ensure that I don't brake any bolts off. Could this affect the aluminum.

Have you tried this process???

The link that vpnavy presented is one way. The normal way is to heat up the area around the bolt first. You may need to use a penetrating oil product like PB Blaster. Sometimes it helps to knock on the bolt with a hammer.

Eventually, if it's really locked up, the head will snap off and then it's time to drill and use easy outs. Now if you freeze the bolt, it may just shatter when you apply force, then you're stuck with a real mess down inside the hole.

Someone asked the same question over on forabodiesonly.com, and got pretty much the same answer. Nothing wrong with getting a second opinion, but I think the answer will about the same wherever you go

Thanks to both of you for contributions. I would like to give the heads a pound with the hammer but prior to trying to turn them out. Unfortunately a water pump on grand caravan prevents from doing so due to space restrictions.

You better off heating it up instead. Just go pick up a small torch from Homedepot or something. In my area they usually have Blue bottle (Propane) and yellow bottle (proprylene), proprylene burns hotter and works better.
when it breaks loose, do NOT try to turn it all the way out with 1 spin, work it In and Out repeatly.

thank you for that information. i don't think i can get the flame on the 2 bolts on the left. The pulley, even after loosing as well as some frame/metal part of the van may prevent me from heating them up.

Maybe, just heating up the other bolts will cause some heat to transfer to the other 2 bolts to cause some breakage allowing me to turn them. What do you think?

Sincerely,

scott
