Here is what I would do. Replace the timing chain and sprocket and once you have the chain off, match with the new parts. If they are the same, you won't need to replace the cover, just the gaskets. If you do replace the chain, let me know so I can send you picture on the both timing marks.a

To fix the noise I don't see that I have any choice. I will take it apart and see what is in there, and I'll have the new bits on hand under the assumption that I do not need to replace the front cover. Hopefully I already have the new width gears on my van and will be able to make the repair.

I am just really annoyed that there is no way to know what is on my van unless I take it all apart, and it isn't exactly a quick process to get in that far either. I've owned a few other makes of cars before, including some half-year changeover cars and never once has a dealership been uncertain on what parts I would need after I gave them my VIN number, and never once have they been wrong.

The reason I am so annoyed by this is the cost of the parts and the time involved. Right now I am ordering everything from a parts supplier that will only ship to a US address. As I am Canadian I had to change the billing address on my credit card to a receiving warehouse in Montana in order to get these parts from them. I did this because the cheapest I can get these same parts from a dealership here is a little over $600, but yet I was able to order them for $171 shipped from this supplier. I am making a trip down to pick up these and a few other parts for myself and a whole carload of parts for my friend.

The front cover from this supplier is a little over $500, but from a dealership here it is about $1600. This means if I dig in and find I need a front cover I would either have to make a new order from this supplier, wait for shipping and drive to/from Montana again, delaying me about a week possibly two, during which time my wife would have no vehicle, or pay $1600 to get the front cover from a dealership here and still add at least 2-3 days to the repair. Whether it is $500 + 2 weeks + the cost of driving to Montana and back or $1600 locally, it just isn't worth that much to fix it, but to simply find out whether it will cost this much and whether I will even be fixing it at all I would have to invest at least 8-10 hours of my time and replace some parts (gaskets/seals) along the way.

Would that be the same for the '06?

It's a weird problem and like you, I can't believe they don't know exactly when they switched, by VIN.

Dealership didn't mention anything like that to me when I inquired about timing parts, so maybe it doesn't apply to '06.
