I just got this 97 Grand Caravan 3.8 with auto trans and put on about a 1000 miles on it. Now the transmission does not want to go into high gear, when it does this,I can pull over and stop the engine and wait maybe 10 seconds and will be alright. What may be causing this? The van does have 195,000 miles.

The transmission is going into limp in, If you have 1st and 2nd gears and no 3rd or 4th. I would say the problem is inside the transmission. How is the fluid condition? If its good, then i would guess you have a broken hub/with shaft.

 

I think it will only not go into fourth gear the way it seems to me!

 

I would have the Clutch Volume Idex (CVI) checked if the OD is above 150, then you have a problem in the overdrive or 4th gear.
