Default 2011 Grand Caravan

Hello, I am new to the forum so here it goes. I took my 2011 Grand Caravan into the dealership for a tire rotation and I was told that I require new rear pads and rotors. I was also told one side is steel on steel. I have 32,000km on this van. Is this a bit early for pad/rotor replacement? From reading the forum it might not be unusual. However, I never heard any noise to indicate there was metal on metal wear. Funny thing is, since I left the garage, now I hear a crunching sound from the back. Anybody have any feedback on this?

Thanks.

Pads and rotors are an easy job to do YOURSELF. Why don't you prgrade to cross drilled slotted rotors and EBC brake pads, this will surely make your minivan stop better.

Brake problems in general have been plaguing 5th gen vans to the point the first 5th gen vans - 2008s - now have an extended warranty. Will it be a matter of time for the following years to get the same? Time will tell.

Until the warranty is up you'll have to live with OEM parts, which in most cases have turned out to be less than a permanent fix. Once the warranty is done I would follow 99Sports suggestion and go specialty aftermarket.

just to add does not matter if u got warranty cause they not going to cover it. its been a fight that some have been paid back from chrysler but you going to have to fight for the money. that many km i just throw new pads one. cheap enough. i would not worry about rotor unless u keep driving it with metal on metal. Do u have any shaking while breaking? if not then i just do pads. these vehicles need to have breaks serviced at 20,000km unbelievable but true.

I just don't know why the breaks make such a noise since leaving the garage. I mean I had no crunching noise when I came in, but I did when I left. Did those guys do something to make them worse?

Yes, by all means, head back to whoever did the brakes and tell them your story. You have at least a minimum 90 day warranty. Most likely longer.

Unless things have changed on the new models your brake pads should have a wear indicator that makes a scrapping noise on the rotor as the pads wear to minimum thickness. You should have gotten ample warning before they went metal to metal.

his going to get the same story that they need to have his brakes done. possibly when they removed to inspect they did not clean the pads sliders causing one pad to ride on the disk. i would find cheap pads and put them on properly. solve most his problems for a while.

Then he's got one remarkably incapable dealership. Should be easy to determine what is causing the grinding noise. Sure wouldn't be a total surprise though.

Let's back up. If he had this worked on days ago, last week, then he's got a damn good argument. If it was months ago that may be a problem

Thanks for the replies. Rear breaks needed new pads and rotors due to the calipers seizing up. The culprit, the calipers, were covered by warranty, but had to pay for new pads/rotors.

Two calipers going at the same time is a bit unusual. Keep an eye on them.
