Default 02 Dodge Caravan - Problem with starting the van

Hey guys,

I'm a proud owner of a 2002 Dodge Caravan.
I just have that one big problem. The Van doesn't start!
When I'm trying to start it with the key it won't work. I tried it with the command start, it doesn't work. I removed the cables from the battery and waited for 10 minutes then put them on again. I tried turning the key, but nothing. Then i tried it with the command start and it turned on. but as sokn as I hit the brakes it shut off again (the key was turned to the "ON" position). What I did now is, I unpluged that plug from the brakes to that box for the command start (I think). Now, it starts only with the command start, it drives, but only for 15 mins. Then i have to turn it on again and can drive for 15 mins again.
Can someone please help me?

Thanks in advance!

So when you are using the key it cranks or no? I also assume that command start is a remote start unit. I'm going to assume you have programmable keys. I'm guessing you have a key issue. If you have another key, try it.

Something don't sound right. If you went to the dealer and had the key programmed, you would have had to have the vehicle there to do it. No vehicle, not programming.

So, if they successfully programmed the key it should have started. If it failed to start they would have been able to tell you the issue being they had the scanner connected.

You were in the right place, better then being here.

Why would you "i am assuming its the anti theft system." when you were at the dealer?

Sniff, sniff, is that fish?

Unhappy I also have this problem

Hello,

I also have the same problem where the car will start with the remote start, but will not crank with key.

My wife was driving when this problem started, the engine just stopped. Fortunately we were in a parking lot, and not going down the road. I had to disconnect the remote start unit from the brake switch to drive back home.

Due to no crank with key, and the remote start unit not recognizing the key in the on position, I assumed it was the ignition switch, so stopped on the way home an purchased one. After installing new switch, I have the same problem. I have not had a chance to check the relay yet , but figure it must be ok or the remote starter unit wouldn't work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS, my vehicle does not have programmable keys.
PSS, prior to this happening, the vehicle would lock and unlock itself intermittently as you were driving, sometimes once or twice other time continually, but not always. (if that makes sense)

I recently went through hell with a bad shop remote start installation. If your unit is not a factory install and the shop will not make good on it call the mfg. They will put their feet to the fire. The makers of viper had them pay me reimbursement for having a better shop straighten it out.

Thank you for your suggestion.

The remote start was a self install, and has been working for a little over a year, and has since this started completely removed.

I found that I have no supply voltage going to the ignition switch (12v steady on) for the start/run portion of the switch. If I jump 12v to that wire the car will crank and start, but will not stay running.

Remote starters are tricky and it may be you did not reverse something you did in the original installation.
If its starting and dieing it sounds like the security system is not happy.
