We have a 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan, about 44,000 miles. The front vibrates when I apply the brakes. Yesterday the brake warning light came on. I am going to take the Van in for service tomorrow. I am trying to decide whether to take the Van to the dealership or take it to another brake service.

My guess is that the front pads will have to be replaced.

How much will it cost to have the pads replaced?

Is there any advantage to taking the Van back to the dealership instead of a brake service like Midas?

You most likely have material transfer onto the rotors, sometimes called hot or high spots or Warpage. Real warping is rare and shakes all the time.
Anyways, if you have vibration you will need the rotors to be resurfaced as well.

Dealerships are going to be higher sometimes but are getting better or say, more competitive. Dealerships will have the best chance of getting any kind of real professionalism.

Call around for prices at different dealerships but I would go with the dealership.

Dealership or reputable independent repair shop. If they machine the rotors, they MUST use an on-car brake lathe.

Stay away from chain operated brake shops. Their $99 brake jobs usually wind up costing around $600 after they milk you for parts you don't need.

 

whats differences on vehicle and the on the shops have? my shop says rotors are so cheap that to just buy new. they charge normally 10-20 each rotor to machine.

 

A few things to consider.

Sometimes even new rotors need to be cut. Cutting should be at least cheaper then new ones.

A couple good questions to ask them.

? What brand rotors and pads are they getting for for you ?
Rotor and pad quality can be key in preventing uneven material transfer from happening again.

? Are they religious about cleaning the caliper pins and bores and reapplying good lubrication material ? What kind?

If the brake warning light came on you ought to check the fluid level and whether or not you have a fluid leak.
