Default No Start On First Try

I bought this '01 Caravan Spot 3.3 Flex with 101,000 miles on it. It now has approx 124,000 on it. I changed the plugs and O2 sensor shortly after buying it just as a matter of maintenance. Changed the fuel pump and filter last summer after the pump started whining intermittently. About 2 months ago I started noticing that it was taking longer for it to start but didn't get too worried about it because it always started. Now week before last I hop in it and it won't start! It cranks just fine, and after turning the key all the way off then trying again it lights off within 2-3 seconds. This process has repeated itself since then; it will not start on the first try.
Two days ago as I was rounding a turn and starting up a small hill in my neighborhood at about 15 mph, the engine stuttered like it was running out of fuel, then after a second or it cleared up. This was suspicious as the gauge showed over 1/2 full. There is no MIL as of yet, but I just realized I haven't checked for stored codes. My next move is to check for codes and hook my timing light up to see if there is spark while cranking.
Any ideas? I want to sell this van before I move but I don't want it dying on the next owner! Thanks for any ideas!

No codes are showing up, but isn't the fuel pump supposed to run for a few seconds when you turn on the ignition?

Yes, about 1-2 seconds. Cycle the key to on and off a couple times to build pressure up. If it consistently starts right up it's a sign system pressure is bleeding off while the van is sitting. Could be your new pump, a leaking line or a fuel injector. Connecting a pressure gauge will prove it.

6simons,

I'm sorry to hear about your starting issues. I have been doing a little digging here in regards to the symptoms you have described. In some cases poor fuel quality or contamination can lead to longer start times. A loss in fuel pressure can also affect start times.

Has a garage or dealer had an opportunity to take a look at the van since these issues have started?

Yes, but as I recall it was the ports on the pump itself that were cracking. He changed his pump about a year ago so I would think it should be ok. Still though, very easy to detect a leak there and well worth a 30 second look see.

Thanks for the replies! I'm leaning towards the pump, as its gotten worse over time. Cycling the key several times before cranking helps, so that clinches it for me. The lesson here is you get what you pay for. This pump was $62.99 shipped on ebay. The next one is coming from a major auto parts chain with a lifetime warranty instead of 60 days! Thanks again!

The new pump did the trick. No more eBay fuel pumps. Thanks for your help, guys!
