Default AC blowing hot on driver's side, funny smell

2004 Dodge Grand Caravan 3.3

This has been going on for almost a year now. I'm not sure if these two are related, but the AC blows cool (not cold) on the right and in the rear, and there's also a weird smell that persists, although I have no idea if it's related... kids can leave some weird junk in the van... but it seems to come from the vents.

I've read about folks saying it could be a bad actuator arm or even a leaking condensor. Where exactly is this elusive actuator and what's involved in testing & replacing it?

Weird smell as in chemical... almost like a strange medicine or bad candy smell. Dude, I know... it's weird. But it does come from the vents.

Can you smell this if you pop the hood and stick your head in there?

Well, im not totally sure what that is to tell you the truth. However; I can tell you what I would do in this situation (i cant tell you exactly how to do it though because im not sure). If it were me, I would drain all the r134a out and refill it, see if that takes care of the smell. It would also hopefully make ya ac blow cold from everywhere. From the sounds of it though its not blowing on the drivers side?

Correct - only driver's side is warm. Others are quite cooler, although not cold.

Theres most likely a door type of thing back in there somewhere. (i cant remember the name of it, been a long day already) It might be stuck closed which is providing the hot air to still come and no cold.. My recommendation is to try the flush on the coolant and see how that goes for helping the other issues, hopefully someone can help on the warm air part. *warning* I may be wrong :P
