From my dealing with this code, replace the cylinder head. Even if it a 4.0 engine, I have seen the same problem as the 3.6 engines.

 

even on a 1998? wow really on a 4.0l? would there be signs? I seem to notice that the intake on mine when I pulled the throttle body to clean so signs of heavy film of oil in it. oppsosite to the throttle body by the battery side I notice that the plastic seam off the intake shows bit oil like if its cracked maybe?

If it's a 3.0 then yes its a Mitsu 6g72.

Code 302 is a cylinder 2 misfire. I would check your wires and make sure everything is where it should be. Also check for vacuum leaks as they can cause a ton of issues.
