Unhappy '98 GCvan Erratic Downshift and Then Limps

'98 GCvan, 3.3l, 4-speed auto, about 110,000 mi. Service Engine light on and Climate Control lights flash. Tranny shifts up and down gears smoothly. After a few minutes driving, when slowing for a turn and then accelerating after turn, tranny downshifts harshly briefly then settles in a more appropriate gear and shifts normally. After a couple or three of these sequences the tranny jumps into Limp Mode. Have found that if I go to Neutral and coast, turn off engine, re-crank engine, and go back to Drive the tranny resets and shifts normally and the sequence starts again. Have noticed that if I get to highway speeds, its fine until traffic slows and then Limp Mode. Replaced the shift solenoid to no effect. Fluid and filter, of course. Any ideas other than tranny replacement? Thnx

Doing this on my own. Don't have a code reader.

I need you have the vehicle scan for codes. I can guess at your problem, but that's all it is. I am a dodge transmission tech. So I need to know the codes.

Either take it to an auto parts store to have them scan for you, or spend $20 and buy yourself a code reader. Can't help without knowing the code.

This should be obvious but, HAVE YOU CHECKED THE FLUID?
If our van is as little as 1/2qt low, it will act up like this. If you haven't checked it, do that first.
