Default When to do first oil change

I'm sure this is posted or been asked before but I can't find it. When does everyone recommend doing the first oil change? The manual doesn't say that I can fine, and I've been getting answers from anywhere around 1000 miles to 8000 miles. The dealer told me the light will come on when it's due for an oil change, but that just goes by mileage correct? Which means it won't come on until 8000 miles or something?

The vehicle uses some sort of algorithm to calculate oil change intervals. It is not the same for everyone. Just wait for the light to cone on. The days of 3000 mile/ 3 month oil changes is far gone. The manual should tell you that the light will cone on but to not exceed a certain mileage/time frame. For example, my 2013 Journey manual states to not exceed 12 months or 10000 miles. My light usually comes on between 7000 and 8000 miles. You can wait for your light to come on or change it whenever you want to. Just done exceed the time/mileage limits in the manual.

Thanks for the reply. The manual did kind of make it sound it wasn't a set number of miles, but I wasn't sure how it did it otherwise. I did see where it said not to exceed 10k mikes. But it did not, that I could find, mention when to do the first oil change. I kind of thought the very first should maybe be done sooner.

Everybody has their preference. Mine is to run it 5000 miles, then change to a high quality synthetic oil. Every 7500 miles after that.

Doing it sooner than recommended certainly will do no harm other than to your wallet.

The problem is everyone has a different "recommendation" for the first. So I'm just going with the dealers recommendation of 3000. The manual doesn't say

Yes, the manual does say. Page 626. It says wait for the indicator but don't exceed 10,000 miles or 12 months. Dealer will always want to change it sooner to make money. I put my faith in the manual written by the vehicle manufacturer. Not a greedy dealer out to make money off the uninformed consumer.

I see that, but I'm still more comfortable doing the first one sooner. It's a small investment in the long run.
