[5th Gen : 08+]: Transmission question
Hey everyone I have been looking this up and cant seem to find an answer
I bought a 2014 dodge grand caravan a few weeks ago with 110,000km it seems to shift okay but going from 4th to 5th the engine will rev up 2-300 rpm before it shifts.
is this normal, if not what would cause this
thanks
also eco is off

Here's a cut&paste of a reply I wrote over on chryslerminivan.net regarding the way the 62TE transmission in my 2016 Caravan shifts and what I've found. Apparently what you're seeing is normal. Mine will sometimes do the engine rev-up when upshifting 4-5 and 5-6. It's the torque converter clutch being released and then reapplied after the shift completes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The transmission in my 2016 DGC has always shifted a bit weird when driven gently (driving like a Grandpa), more so with eco mode on. If the van is driven with a 'younger, heavier foot' then it shifts perfectly like you would expect with well-timed shifts that are very smooth. I did a fluid/filter change last weekend at 55K miles using Mopar fluid and filter and the shift quality didn't really change much.
A while back I set up a dashboard in OBD Fusion (Android phone app) that monitors:
-Desired and actual line pressure
-Desired and Actual gear
-Trans Temp
-Torque converter slip
I found that what I thought was hunting between gears and slipping with an occasional engine rpm flare between 4-5 and 5-6 was actually the torque converter clutch being applied and released. On this 62TE trans the TC clutch can be partially applied (sort of a regulated amount of slip) and that's what is happening. The tc clutch is also released the moment the trans is shifting gears, then slowly re-applied. When driving and the rpms keep changing even though your foot isn't moving it's not that the trans is actually changing ratios, it keeps changing the amount of slip in the torque converter, sometimes rapidly over and over if you get the perfect combination of load and speed, usually in the 45 to 55 mph range. I think with a bit of programming the 'shifting weirdness' could be reduced but that's not something us mere mortals can do. The van still shifts the same since I bought it in summer 2017 so apparently nothing is actually failing internally.
I also discovered that when in eco mode not only are the shift points changed, it skips gear 2 (shifts 1-3-4-5-6) except when starting off at near-WOT (shifts 1-2-3-4-5-6). Amazing what they can do with computer controlled transmissions!

Did it ever get worse for you? Did you ever find more information on it?
Thank you!
The van now has 72000 miles on it and it still shifts like it did when I bought it in June 2017 with 34000 miles.
A few months ago I drove a friends 2011 T&C and didn't notice the breif engine speed increase during 4-5 and 5-6 shifts like my van does so maybe it's a case of 'some of them shift this way and some don't'. I don't know if it's a programming issue or something bad in the hardware that causes the issue. If the trans dies then I will have to fix it, I plan to just keep on driving. So far this van has surprised me by being very reliable, especially since it was a Hertz rental car for the first 34000 miles.

I have the same issue...2013 Caravan, 280,000km....revs bounce around 2-300 rpm in 5th gear....I try to lay off the gas a little and get it to shift into Overdrive....then it stops. It happens in both Normal and Eco mode. Good to know it's nothing serious....I'm going to try a fluid change in the spring and see if it improves.
I have this same issue with my 2012 Chrysler 200 (62TE transmission as well) when up shifting into 5th and 6th gear. I just got the car with 54k km on it, so I'm not sure when the problem started or if it was always like this, but it doesn't seem normal. I'm taking it in to a garage tomorrow to get their opinion, but most likely they will just refer me to a transmission shop.

What you should be worried about is if starts downshifting hard into lower gears/speed. My 19 transmission starts acting weird the minute I put the air conditioning on and I have had the torque converter lock up and had to have the transmission overhauled.
I wouldn't get to paranoid about it. My 11 caravan went for 257K mi before the engine blew, and that was only because the greenhorn at Dodge service overfilled my coolant upon a coolant flush. As long as you do safeguard (drain and fill only, not flush) transmission services and do routine oil changes every 6K miles it will last many more miles.
Also, don't use the cruise control. It's a good way to pop the engine because you forget it is engaged at 75mph and you start going up hill, it overcompensates causing extreme pressure on the engine and puts high demand on the transmission.

The 62TE just like the 41TE will use lockup torque converter is all gears weather the A/C is on or not. You could hear sometimes a ratchet sound when taking shifter out park and shift into reverse. This normal, you are hearing the solenoid pack shifting.
