Question P0128 advice....

hello all.

autozone got the code above. in his experience it usually happens when it gets cold out and it is 30 degrees out and the check engine light came on. Been doing some reading and 90% of the time it is the tstat.
Any other advice yall might have?
I did notice the temp gauge takes a while to start moving to the center position.....
Heater works fine inside the car.
Any videos out their on how to change the tstat?

thx

More important, use a GOOD quality thermostat. Stant is a good brand.

I don't think it matters which brand of coolant you use, so long as it is the correct type. pre-mix, or concentrate is up to you. I think it's actually cheaper to go with concentrate, but, the pre-mix stuff makes sure you have the right level of protection.

I am sure there are videos on youtube for changing your stat.

Your vehicle is designed for HOAT (the orange stuff). I cannot stress this enough, you CANNOT mix HOAT and non-HOAT coolants. If so they will react and gel (solidify) inside your cooling system. It's ridiculously easy to change the thermostat, you literally move the hose clamp on the stat neck up so you can pull the hose, then undo the bolts holding the neck (13mm if memory serves) and the thermostat is underneath. Make sure when you put the new one in the bleed hole goes UP (or you'll hate life lol). You won't lose much coolant, all you'll need to do is fill the expansion tank back up to 'cold fill' and run it up to temp, this will help it burp the air out. Once it cools off, you should notice the level dropped, open the cap and some air should escape. Keep repeating this cycle until the level doesn't drop anymore.

For the minimal amount you will lose, reread my post above. Had you gone deeper into the engine like pulled heads, etc then there is a bleed screw on the front. You have to do it while its running and it tends to get messy. #2 for reference.
