Default Challenger rebuild question

I have not bought one yet but I am looking. Since my 20 year old is going to school to be a ASE certified mechanic I figured this would be good on both parts. 1 to help him and 2 because I am a 52 year old man I need a sports car LOL.

The challenger comes in v6 and v8. The 5.7L V8 is the same 5.7L V8 that's in the Ram. So with that being the case what should I look for when I buy a cheaper V6 Challenger and do the V8 conversion? Yes I am going to buy used.

That makes no sense. No, it would not be cheaper. Just buy one with the 5.7 already.

I understand when its all done the price would be about the same but it would also build memory and give him some experience. So I am investigating the conversion process.

Might be more tempted to get one that already has a V-8, and have him rebuild it.

Buy a 1970 -1974 Challenger and drop in a big block! Going from a 6 to an 8 will need a pcm flash different engine harness and who knows what else. You may want to look at insurance auctions for something that can be fixed up. Be warned you need to document ever part, cost, and have receipts/documentation. You can repair it but it will need to be inspected by your state before they will give you a good title. Check with your state DMV for details.

The V6 is physically built and wired differently than the V8 cars. If he is going to be a repair mechanic, swapping completely different engine families, half rewiring a car and upgrading various components to match the power isn't what he is going to be doing. It isn't like the old days, you can't just swap an engine and make it work. If you wanna do something similar that actually makes sense, get an R/T (maybe even one with a blown engine) and swap/upgrade the engine (to say a 392), suspension, brakes, etc. Same engine family you don't have to futz with the wiring; the worst part will be tuning.
