Registering a new car, out of state bought with cash
The administrators will probably move this post but thought I'd start here with my fellow Challengers. I recently bought a new Challenger in CA and had it delivered to another state. To register the vehicle the DMV website told me that I needed to bring 1) proof of insurance, 2) bill of sale and 3) MCO = Manufacturer's Certificate of Origination to their office.
Turns out this is not the process. The DMV keeps a very tight rein on your title, the MCO and bill of sale gets sent to the DMV by the DEALER. The registration process is completely separate and you're on the honor system to pay SALES TAX since the DMV has no idea what you paid for the vehicle. The bill of sale sits with the Title dept. and it will have a ZERO $$ amount on it. I'm an honest person and brought my sales contract to show proof of $$ amount of sale.
Once the DMV gets their seriously backlogged admin work done they will mail you your title.

What state or you registering the car in? Each state does it's own thing on titles. The dealer will often take the sales tax and pay it to your home state. I'm in extreme S.W. Indiana. As the crow flies, I'm 20 miles from Illinois and 3 miles from Kentucky. If you buy it in a state with 6% sales tax and you live in a state with 7%, they will keep the 6% and send it to your home state. You pay the other 1% in your home state. However, there are 50 states and each one is a little different.
Titles are bearer bonds. That's why the security around them. Once signed and the key are in your possession, it's yours.
I generally try to avoid Ca. cars. They tend to be under powered compared to Federal spec. vehicles. We don't even have emissions inspections around here.
Interesting observation, Ol' Grouch, never thought of that. This is a 2023 Hellcat Redeye and I looked far and wide since it is Last Call and this was the only one I found. Where I live we do not have to smog vehicles but this is a CA car built in Canada. Short of putting it on a dyno is there a way to tell that I have the full 797bhp (or 807 or 812 from what I hear from others = you get the full original Demon engine with the tune correct)? Now frankly stepping on the gas with this car scares the hell out of me! :-)
And people have mentioned a Jailbreak tune that gives the car more than the typical 797bhp advertised. Car came with some nifty things like hellcat with red eye on blower, Jailbreak emblem by glove compartment, Last Call placard in engine compartment. :-)

Good, being scared means you will respect the car and not be one of the Youtube videos of you wrapping it around a tree. I bought my first motorcycle from a Hell's Angel. He didn't look like one, he was a patched member. He gave me some advice I've always followed and often pass on. Be afraid of your machine. Not terrified, just a little afraid. That way you will respect it. When you think you have it mastered, that's when it will reach around and bite you.
