Default Thermostat ?

have been looking at a 180 thermostat that everyone on here seems to love but one simple ?

i have seen a 165 thermostat that would seem to offer better performance but is this a smarter move since it would "technically" keep the engine cooler then the 180 ?

It would technically keep the engine cooler but there is a point of diminishing returns, you will get Check Engine Lights (CELs) when you go too low. Go with a 180 and you will be happy any cooler and you might have issues.

Your engine needs to retain some heat to remain at an optimum operating temperature. The we used to call the 165's tropic thermostats. I tried one when I lived in Hawaii and ended up going back to a 180 when I got my radiator recored . I have noticed my 06 has a sweet spot around 195 degrees. A 180 (or maybe 190?) with the correct fan setting should be sufficient. A 165 might make it run too cold on the open road.

For me the 180 worked great, no error codes. Since I have not modified my fan control, it only makes a difference on the highway. In stop and go traffic it stays just where DCX programmed it.

Be careful selecting the correct thormstat. The first one I installed was a fraction to deep, and it was mechanically kept from opening because of clearance, causing my engine to overheat. The installation is a snap, if you can locate the video someone made and posted on here.

Enjoy!

Engine temps will rise to stock tempature unlessyou have a fan mod or a tuner that allows you to override the stock settings.

Here are a couple 180 t-stats that you should be able to find:
PepBoys - Stant 14248
NAPPA - 191 THM

<edit> I saw a post that said that Autozone has a valuecraft 180 t-stst part number 4128

The key is their 2.5 inch wide (63.5mm).
