09 Daytona Top end tick/knock
Hey guys tomorrow im going to bid on a 09 daytona RT, with 83xxx Kms.
However on the site there are foot notes that say: *ENGINE KNOCK*
Now the knock/tick sound is from the driver top end. in point for facts here are some facts about the car/this issue:
-DIC states it needs an oil change.
-Loud tick from driver side top gets faster as the car is revved.
-The tick is quite loud.
Here are 2 videos of the issue

Any thoughts before i drop 10k on it?

What's the rest of the car look like?
$10k for an '09 is a good price then maybe a couple thousand to have your top end rebuilt. You would still be cheaper than what most dealers are offering.
Get pics first, because obviously the owner ran this car REALLY hard to get that tick.

I got an uncle who did most of the work on his monte carlo 350, including rockers etc etc. Is it a possible job i could do on my own?
and does this sound like a MDS issue??
Looks physically ok.
It is not a MDS issue. They raced that car. The HEMI does have a natural ticking sound but not that loud. It is going to need a rebuild done.
As far as you doing it. It all depends on how well you know your stuff. If you have never torn into an engine, I would not recommend you try it alone on your first go around. Definitely something you need to be shown. And yes, you can make it worse.
The ad mentions that it is a bidding deal. There is going to be some idiot there probably that is not doing their research on the car and end up bidding really high. If you can not pick up the car for under $11k, I would walk away from it. Maybe look for an '06 to '08 for your price range.

Well thats the thing, my uncle has turn into top ends of a few cars, he rebuilt his 350 from teh ground up. But this engine is quite a bit newer than his 350. What is going to be needed? Pop the valve covers off and replace from there or are heads gonna need to come off?
Also what kind of prices am i looking at if i do it myself, or if i get a shop to do it.
Alright just talked to my uncle, he said it would have to be something id have to take in he doesnt think he could do it. Hes also worried about possible damage done on the bottom end, thoughts?

The bad thing about auction cars is you rarely are able to test drive them. So seeing if there is a check engine light is on, pulling codes, or feeling or hearing anything else when the engine loaded is difficult. So finding anything else out prior to buying is a gamble. That's why I say don't pay more than 11 for it.
The Hemi is a hard engine to work on. Nothing like working on the old 350. As far as pricing up in your area, not sure. It will definitely be in couple thousand though give or take. You could possibly stop by your local dodge dealer and let a tech hear that video and he might be able to let you know a rough estimate as far as cost so you know what you are getting into here. The techs we have here on DF are all US techs. Prices will be different.
If you think your odds are bad at the gamble. You could always buy a crate engine and replace the whole thing. Then you wouldn't have to worry. You can get base Hemi engines for around $4000. Just have to find a shop to swap it. If you went that route, and was able to get the car for $10k, then you would be paying what the car is actually worth but you would have a new, no mileage engine under the hood.

You can buy reman'd hemi engines for 3 grand plus install. American. I found one place that would put the 6.1 cam in the 5.7 and ship.
So add roughly 4000 into the price and consider whether its a good deal. You'd have a 0 mile hemi in a nice car which is a plus.
Hemi tick is a lubrication issue and once its there it cannot be fixed without a top end rebuild. To have a mechanic do it will cost multiple thousands in parts. Or buy a reman engine,or a crate motor.
