Misfire cylinder 7
Hey everyone I bought a 06 dodge charger rt in September 2019 and it's been giving me a **** ton of problems. Now I have a misfire on cylinder 7. It turns off after a few minutes.. this **** literally leaves me on the road. And it blows white smoke from exhaust. It doesnt have any water in the oil, but I towed it to my mechanic and he scanned it the only codes that show up is the wrong oil type and that I have a misfire on cylinder 7. He opened it and said the misfire ****ed up my engine.. what can I do in this situation. He told me I can either patch it up for 2,500 or get a used engine or new.. i just want to get a second opinion. Husband is mad he just wants me to get rid of the car because we have spent over 2k on just repairs and it keeps messing up.
Pick your part only gives me 700$. I paid $4,500 from a guy on offer up for the car and 2k on top for repairs. Now I'm upset because regardless of what I do I end up losing.. I put it up on craigslist but I keep getting offered 500$.

The misfire is likely a result of other problems, not the cause of them. If you are blowing white smoke, that indicates a blown head gasket. A relatively straightforward repair, but, not inexpensive.... I am curious what your mechanic means by 'patch it up'..... If that's 'pull the heads, do the machine work, replace the gaskets', 2500 is kinda high for that. (though, where you live makes a difference, that might be standard price in LA......)
I think no matter which way you slice it, you are going to end up with more money invested in the car, than it is really worth. Of course, if you fix it, you can continue to drive it.... and repairs are still cheaper than a couple years of car payments.
How many miles on the car, and what kind of shape is the rest of it in? Do you trust your mechanic??

It has 132k miles on it.. I put it up on craigslist for sale because husband just doesnt want to deal with it anymore. Because it also has this issue with the cluster. The gauges and icons flicker randomly. I'm not sure if it's an electrical problem. And I got told that the 06-08 hemi are known for the heads dropping the valve into piston cylinder causing piston & head damage. That this guy just did that to his daughter charger. And what bothers me is that I cant just drive the car around I have to get it towed to get it checked out and actually see what's wrong with it. I keep getting told to just get rid of it but I feel so bad because we spent a good amount and to sell it for $1,000 just upsets me... if you were in my position would you get rid of the car or fix it?
I do trust my mechanic.. my parents are the ones that recommended him to me. But the price was high I do agree with that... but he says when he opened it the motor is done. I dont know exactly what he meant by that. I was too overwhelmed to ask what he meant by that but he told me bu patching it up that it would be a quick fix to sell it but I mean I spent $ 4,500 + 2k in repairs already plus another $2,500 for a quick fix I'm not gonna get back what I spent. And I need a good according to him 4k if I want a new engine in the car.
all I keep getting offered is less than $1,000 this breaks my heart so bad.

Yeah, it sucks, but, there it is.....
He opened the motor? In what fashion? Is it not currently driveable? Where is it sitting?
At this point, if you don't have anything else to drive, and absolutely MUST have a RELIABLE car..... taking the loss on the charger, and buying something else might be the best plan. You may sink a bunch more money into it, and then have something else fail..... and take even more of a loss. Parting it out probably isn't a good option for you either.... Takes too long, and some parts simply won't sell.... You may or may not get more than a grand that way.......
I would be real tempted to find out what is actually wrong with the motor, basically, ask the guy that worked on it WHY he thinks the motor is done, and what led him to that conclusion. He wouldn't be the first mechanic that came highly recommended, but still took advantage of someone with less knowledge of the issue, than he has..... Happened to my son recently.... went in for a tie-rod replacement, and they gripped him for a whole bunch of other stuff... a 200 dollar repair turned into a 3000 dollar repair. I don't trust anyone any more. Maybe I am just old and jaded.
Let us know what you end up doing.
