Magnaflow drone
OK, mnboy (mmmmmm, love that crow pie
), I've gotten to the point where I'd like to try and do something to get rid of that droning. It's not the sound so much as the vibrations it sets up. Anyone have any ideas on what causes this and how to - inexpensively - get rid of it?

dyno mat makes sense...seeing how the back end is like an open chamber because of the spare tire and battery..you can puchase that from most walmarts or car audio places..i'm gonna give it a try.

WHAT??? The guy that told me to "just turn up the radio" is now complaining?!?
HEY, DAVE, JUST TURN UP THE RADIO, IT'S NOT THAT BAD!!! [sm=lol.gif]
You know what I went through. I posted my plight and ire with Magnaflow, you read it from the start.
My boys suggested the Dynamat also, but it is A LOT of work to get it right next to the metal, it is expensive to do this (I checked what it would take to completely seal up the bottom, rear, trunk, back seat area), and it adds weight to the car to get enough of it to work. And when you are done, did it ACTUALLY work? You won't know until you've spent hours and hours and hours and all that money putting the stuff on.
My muffler shop suggested things like putting glass packs between the suitcase and the rear Magnaflow resonators (after I removed the stock rear mufflers). For me, the big culprit was the Magnaflow True-X muffler, which allowed the DRONE.
I am currently running the stock suitcase resonator (which in the Daytona is also see-thru) and the two MF rear resonator/mufflers (they are see-thru perforated chrome pipes) and at this moment are quiet at idle, good at cruising speeds, and roar when I'm on it. So for now, I'm good.
I'm surprised at the number of people that live with it and like it. Uff. I had enough of that in my GTX with 40s on it! THAT, my friend, was really, really bad. But sounded cool. But was bad. But cool. Ah, you know how that goes!! [sm=teetertooter.gif]
I know what you are saying... I SAID I KNOW.

I wonder what would happen if the "X" pipe was removed altogether? I know the original had one, and so does the Magnaflow, but I wonder if this is the source of the drone? Mine feels more like its at the center/muffler/resonator, not at the tail. Maybe cause I have those new, quieter tires, that is what is making the difference. JUST KIDDING, MNBOY!

I'm going to address a couple of posts here.
After I removed the rear thingies (like dodgegirl just did), I tried spraying undercoat (3 coats) under the trunk well and in the cavities that were just vacated by the resonators/mufflers. It reduced the noise a little but it was still loud enough to be irritating. Cut down on road noise so it was not a total waste.
Sound insulation material would probably give better results but as mnboy pointed out, it's a lot of work, adds weight, and it may end up as expensive as an exhaust system fix.
The "X" pipe balances the exhaust pressure between sides and improves scavaging. It smooths out the exhaust flow and reduces the sound somewhat because of this smoother flow. If you remove it, my bet is that things will seem rougher which would make the droning problem even worse and may reduce power. Magnaflow achieves the balancing in the single first muffler rather than using an external crossover connection. It's interesting that DC uses the X pipe and a single muffler/resonator.
If all else fails, you can always turn up the radio. (sorry, couldn't help myself)

Redbeard,
You are correct about the X pipe. Dave, "X" pipes, or crossovers as Redbeard stated, have been used since the sixties to improve equalization between sides when using dual exhaust -- properly done (in the right location and the right size) it can improve flow, balance, and reduce noise. The stock X pipe is NOT the problem here.
By the way guys, I almost always drive without the radio on. Old habits die hard, and I used to drive motorcycles alot, so listening to the engine, transmission, wheels, tires, etc, became an obsession to listen for trouble. Old squad car habits die hard too, and I just got used to listening to the car, not to music, and if I do listen it's talk radio. Good grief, who wants to know this anyway?!?
After working in a madhouse during the day, the quiet of the car, the humm of the engine and the smell of the leather are my relaxers -- I definately don't want to hear ROARING or DRONE after a long day...

My 300c has same problem. Did the radio volume **** mod, too.
Also put dynamat in trunk.
Superchips tuner gives me gear 5 and in 5th you don't have it. Other wise I'd leave it in 4th around town and not get it at all.
It's a trade-off Money now for more gas or money later for hearing aids.
