55 Power Flite fluid
I have a 55 Dodge Custom Royal with a PowerFlite trans. Just got it started and rebuilt the brakes. Almost ready to drive! The trans works but is low (off the dipstick). What can I safely use in place of type A fluid?
Also I have no idea what is in there now.

I had a '54 Coronet with the 241 and Powerflite and I used Dexron II. I had pulled the engine to replace the rotten expansion plugs so I pulled the transmission with it. (They are FUN to separate.) I left the torque converter on the engine and pulled the drain plugs out of the converter to let it drain all the way. This way I had fresh fluid all through. You won't believe how smooth that puppy will shift when you fill it with fresh Dexron. I got the info from an old time transmission mechanic who worked on them new. Dexron is just a better, slicker Type A.
So you think Dexron II versus III. ? I just want to top it off right now for winter storage. I'm a little concerned about mixing with what's in there so I'll definitely want to do a full fluid change next spring.
I think II or III will be just fine. I think the difference is just additives for electronics, which you don't have. I miss my old Dodge. It had an unsilenced air cleaner and that WHOOOMP when you got on it and kicked it down was impressive.
