Default 1962 D500 2-ton flatbed truck

I got what I think is an awesome truck this summer and need to learn where to get parts. There's lots of rust on the cab floor I'll have to fix but am starting with brakes. I need a source for new cylinders.

Also, is this cab the same exact thing as other models, such as the D300? If so it will open some doors for me to find parts.

The engine is a 318ci and the manual transmission is 2 speed.

The cab itself, doors, roof and such is the same as the 100-300 models. Maybe the hood and grill. The fenders are NOT the same. There are several sites that follow the Sweptline trucks. Like this one http://sweptline.com/

Unless it's an automatic (very rare, I've only seen one), it's not a 2 speed. It should be a 4 speed, although it might have a two speed rear end.

Yea, I wasn't clear and meant it has a 2-speed rear end.

So where can I get brake parts like cylinder?

Your local parts store can't get them??

Do you know what rear axle it has in it? Maybe have a chat with one of the local "big truck" repair shops around you.

Which cylinder? Master? Wheel? Take LOT'S of pictures.Parts may be available, but you'll have to hunt. Kanter is pretty good at getting the rubber parts to rebuild wheel cylinders and such. You probably have the basic single cylinder master cylinder. I have interchange books that go back that far but I'll need to know exactly what you need. On the wheel cylinders, you'll need to measure the bore inside.

Also with an old Dodge you just might not be able to get the parts. You may have to switch to something newer and modify it. It sucks I know, but you want to be safe also. Dodge carried the same parts for lengthy production runs, sometimes for a few generations. You might find parts from the 80s or early 90s that will work. Just do your research. You will have to become one of those expert Dodge guys that knows all the part numbers, and what year Dodge changed the inside door handle design. Dodges are not easy. But they are worth it.

The sweptline forums are a great tool. They also have some information pages that will help, and some sweptline resource links.

I removed the master brake cylinder and can start there. I may decide to get a new one. Once installed I'll bleed the brakes and decide what's next. Do you think I'll have to rebuild the brake booster?

Rebuilding is fairly easy. However, inspect the bore for pitting from rust. If the truck has stayed in service most of it's life, that may not be an issue. Get some cheap calipers and measure the inside bore. Rebuild kits may be available. On the booster, maybe and maybe not. You may need to visit a commercial truck parts shop.

On the wheel cylinders, look to see if you have a single dual piston cylinder and two single piston cylinders. If you have to single piston units, I can give you some tips to keep from tearing your hair out.

I completed the installation of the master brake cylinder and need to bleed the brakes. But just pumping once seems to be pretty good at the moment.

Now I'm wondering about whether I need to rebuild the brake booster. I guess I need to determine that after driving a bit. While it was sitting for months my clutch master cylinder became empty so I'll need to bleed that to have any clutch.

Anyone know a source in northern California for a rebuild kit on the booster? Or a shop where I can get it done? I prefer to learn how myself. If anyone can rebuild it then there must be a rebuild kit available.

It's a Midland Hy-Power. Anyone know if the D500 is the same as the D300 booster? Because maybe Rockauto has them.

Rebuilding the carburetor which is the Carter BBD model. It has a mechanical governor at the base of it and was not hooked up. It was not capped off either. Seems to me that would create a vacuum leak, right?

Obviously, it was designed to use the governor but not sure if I can rebuild it. So can I just cap off the tube and ignore it without something bad happening?

It's possible that the metal screen was clogged up. And the throttle plates are stuck in the open position but after cleaning it might be possible to close them.
