Default 1957 royal rear view mirror

New, but old, owner trying to do a few repairs. It seems the fender mirror should be adjustible. I removed from fender but don't know how to access innards for cleaning to unfreeze. Thank you for any advise.

Soak the whole thing in 50/50 trans fluid/acetone...... Not sure what that will do to the glass, but, I don't *think* it will hurt it..... If there is any glue in there though, the acetone will likely eat it.

I will try that. Do you happen to know if the cone shaped piece on the end is removable. Threaded? Thanks.

I'll have to look at my '55 Chrysler, but if I remember correctly, there is a screw on the very front of the unit. It uses a special cross point, NOT Phillips head screw driver. I seem to remember the mirror on my '58 wagon had it back in the early 70's and when it got loose, I used a flat head screw driver to tighten it. If you have the flat screw, find a flat head driver that fits tightly and see how that works.

I pulled the mirror out for my '55 and there is one Philips screw in the very front. These are exposed to the elements and rain and snow hits it at speed, but if you soak it, you can probably undo the screw and remove the mirror head..

Thanks for the replies Ol Grouch. There is only one fastener on the outside which allows you to remove the mirror from the fender. I am going to soak it and try to remove the end cap. I will post if successful.

Soaked as suggested. Was able to unthread the tapered end cap. Inside is a nut that can be loosened to adjust mirror. Sorry but unable to post pictures.
