Batman: The best suggestion I can offer you would be to try and find the most RAM for the least amount of money. The point here is to boost the memory by as much for the least amount. However, if you can snag 2gb of memory for 15 bucks more then 1gb, you should definitely do that.
The other thing to keep in mind is if you have an onboard video card, that will eat into the amount of memory your system is able touse and see.
For example: Most onboard video cards eat between 64mb and 256mb of physical memory from your system. So, if you only had 512mb, you could already be down to as little as 256mb of physical memory when using your computer. Just keep that in mind, and since I dont know your computer setup, it may not even affect you at all..

I'd have to agree here, however I'm of the opinion its always best to have 4gb of memory, regardless of how many sticks it takes.
