Default RAM

heres a ram question for you guys
my mother is capable of 4Gb, but i currently only have one 512 stick, and i've got three empty slots

which would be better, 2 512 sticks or 1 1g?

its not slow right now but it has trouble when i get on big PS projects,

Some memory has to be paired up, and others work less efficiently when not matched to similar sized memory.

I'd have to agree here, however I'm of the opinion its always best to have 4gb of memory, regardless of how many sticks it takes.

Batman: The best suggestion I can offer you would be to try and find the most RAM for the least amount of money. The point here is to boost the memory by as much for the least amount. However, if you can snag 2gb of memory for 15 bucks more then 1gb, you should definitely do that.

The other thing to keep in mind is if you have an onboard video card, that will eat into the amount of memory your system is able touse and see.

For example: Most onboard video cards eat between 64mb and 256mb of physical memory from your system. So, if you only had 512mb, you could already be down to as little as 256mb of physical memory when using your computer. Just keep that in mind, and since I dont know your computer setup, it may not even affect you at all..

Totally agree. I was just saying two in his situation, but seeing as how cheap DDR2 RAM is now, you can easilly get 4x1GB of RAM for next to nothing (compared with how much it used to cost).

System specs would be helpful. Depending on the rest of your system I would say go for 2x 1GB or 2x 2GB. Make sure your motherboard is able to support the ram you are buying as well.
