Computer reprogram for larger wheels tires
[8D]Don't you just love these so called 5 Star Dealers. Anyway stopped by our "local" dealer to check on getting the 3rd brake light plastic piece reattached, that is another story. Anyway asked while I was there about getting the computer reprogrammed for the RT wheels and tires. Service tech had a blank stare and said I need to check on this, he came back and said it is not possbile. Now based on what I have read here it is possible is there some kind book or notice I can point these not so smart people toooo
Thanks

Well the guy is an idiot. Next time see the service manager. I seen them in person use the handheld programmer, and one of the options was tire size. Its the same programmer that does how long the light stay on after the ignition is turn off.
Might want to research that a little more before you go in telling them they don't know what they are doing. The official word from DCX is NO, it cannot be done. I know for a FACT the original LX's could NOT be reset with new tire sizes. It was done at end of line programmng only. I haven't checked in a few months so they may have changed the software since then. About 95% of the DCX line can be reprogrammed but few select models they keep that software under lock and key.
Dodgemech,
Sincey you are a Dodge machanic, can't you give us the skinny on this? Can you help? I mean, they did it on my Magnum SXT, and this is a Magnum forum, so wouldn't it be the same for ALL Magnums?? I put 20's on my car and the dealer reprogramed mine. Puzzled by your statements?????

I also have an SXT. Purchased RT 18's off the internet. Took car to dealer to have everything recalibrated. Was told that this could not be done. The computers would have to be swapped out and that there is no software patch.
He stated that the ESP, ABS and ATCS system is calibrated to the 17's tires and rims and any deviations will throw it off. The warranty for all parts that may be affected by changing the tires is voided also. If any error codes are thown that relate to tire/rim change will not be covered.
I went home and put the 17's back on. If anybody knows different, please post it. I really like these 18's.

Swapping computers will not work unless there is another car with exactly the same options you have except it has bigger wheels, then you would have to buy at least 3 different modules to make it all work. As stated earlier, DCX is working on a lot of things that they may release to it's technicians, for right now we are kind of limited.
Yes, all LX platforms are fundamentally the same, I am not sure what the dealer you went to did for you, maybe nothing and decided to just tell you what you wanted to hear (been there/done that). Sometimes it's just better to live and fight another day than argue with a customer all day.
I promise to look into it on Monday morning, Fridays I go in around 0500 and just work on getting the hell out of there so I didn’t mess with it today. I think I have a call to engineering on another matter to finish up so if I can’t get into it on my own I’ll ask them if they expect a date that software might be released if at all.

17, 18 or 20 inch wheels doesn't matter, just get the overall tire diameter the same as stock and you won't need to reprogram anything.

Yes very true, but the wheels tires from an RT about 1/2 -3/4 inch taller thus 2 mph difference in the speedo, not a big deal and can live with it. But if can be reprogrammed then will have it done.

Since the Magnum has it's own special interface, and because I have a very good relationship with the General Manager at my dealership, I was allowed to watch as they reprogrammed for the tires. In the display, it has an input for tire/wheel size which, according to the dealership, also recalibrates everything else, including the ABS, traction control, and electronic stability program. After this was done for my 20" wheels, I then when to another friend of mine with the Texas State Highway Patrol and we checked the speedo with his calibrated police car. It was right on the money, so, with that said, I guess the answer is, Yes, the dealership, if up with the latest and greatest from DC, can reset for wheel/tire size.
If they still insist it can't be reprogrammed (even though it really can). You will just have to get lower profile tires so that the total diameter is the same as the stock wheel/tire setup. Good Luck!!
