Dodgemech,
I just read the articall that is posted in #30 from Car and Driver. I feel I have been Bamboozled. Castrol is a full synthetic as long as your definition and there definition of synthetic are the same. I HATE when I am miss lead by a company. I am sure there product is ok but if they are going to misslead me and others on there product by calling it something it truely is not, they just might be fabrocating about other things to.

This is a real good thread and good conversation by all. Its how we all learn...

...(only the HEMI) requires use of 5W-20 oil for control of the valves for the MDS system....
I thought MDS was controlled electronically. What do the hydraulic valves do?

The hydraulic valves shut-off oil flow to the lifters in those cylinders so they truly free wheel. This aids in the effeciency of the engine and the seamless transition form 4cyl mode to 8 cyl mode.

It makes sense to eliminate the compression cycle. Thanks for the info.

If these values are just shutting off the oil, I would think it can't really tell if the oil is 5W20 or 10W40 for that matter, would it.

They are very small passages, if the oil is too thick or has poor flow properties then when it switches back to 8 cyl mode the valves would not be open yet and you would definitely have a problem.

Just did my 3k oil change with dino. I've been told to run dino oil for the first 6000 miles so the engine gets to wear in and loosen up. Then switch to synth. When I did this in my Cougar, my mileage went up 2 MPG with just switching to Mobil 1. You can't tell me it's not slipperier.

Marbles vs. rocks. Nice analogy.

" The point of using syn oil is to extend the engine oil change interval. "

Although the engine oil change intervals can be increased (to 35,000 miles with Amsoil 0W-30), the best reasons for using synthetic Amsoil are protection and preservation!! The theory is to break in your engine with dino oil for 5,000 to 10,000 miles to achieve peak performance, and then switch to Amsoil to preserve that high level of performance for as long as possible!!!

Check out the reduced wear when using Amsoil 0W-30:

Not for me either!! I change my Amsoil Oil ( http://www.amsoil.com/products/xlm.htm ) and Amsoil SDF Oil Filter ( http://www.amsoil.com/products/sdf.html ) every 4,000 miles, but Amsoil does claim 35,000 miles or 1 year for 0-W30!!

But some guys insist upon using whatever they can to save a few dollars, even at the expense of their $35,000 car's life and performance!! I always treat my vehicles like I was going to keep them forever!! "Use it, but don't abuse it!!"

" It is true the HEMI (only the HEMI) requires use of 5W-20 oil for control of the valves for the MDS system "

AMSOIL SAE 5W-20 XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oil ( http://www.amsoil.com/products/xlm.htm ) is specially formulated to provide outstanding wear protection, power, fuel economy and performance for 7,500 miles or six months of service. Customers using the new lower viscosity 5W-20 motor oils will want the extra protection afforded by AMSOIL XL7500 5W-20 Synthetic Motor Oil.

Four Ball Wear Test (ASTM D 4172 @ 40 kgf, 150°C, 1800 rpm, 1 hour, Scar in mm) = 0.38

AMSOIL SAE 5W-20 XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oil is $5.20/qt online at

http://intershop.amsoil.com/cgi-bin/...f00714/Catalog !

PS: Although I highly recommend Amsoil products as the best, I AM NOT AN AMSOIL DEALER!!
