the milage is stored in the PCM and the cluster. if you swap in a new PCM, the dealer can correct the milage to match the cars actual milage with a starscan tool.

a PCM change will not affect the cluster's odometer reading.

the odometer mileage is stored in both the cluster and the PCM. if you swap in a different PCM, the cluster's odometer readings will not be affected.

for example: if your car currently has 25000 miles on it and you swap in a new PCM with zero miles on it. the PCM will start to add miles like a brand new car while your cluster will continue to add miles like nothing ever happened. and suppose you drive another 5000 mles since the PCM swap, your cluster will read 30000 and the PCM will read 5000 miles. not good if you or the new owner ever take the car in for service.

legally, the dealer will need to correct the miles in the new PCM to match your cars actual milage. this is done through a starscan tool.

the new PCM will have to be programmed to your car's VIN and the numbers that are on the original PCM. i forgot what the call those numbers, but there is a sticker on your original PCM with a series of numbers on it. they need to program that into the replacement PCM.

you can't just use a used PCM from another car like your. it will start, but won't stay running.

What would happen if you change both the cluster and the pcm would you still have to get the pcm programmed
