Default Airbag Fault. Anyone seen it?

Bah. Fired up my RT this morning as usual and drove the 3 whole miles to work. I have remote start in the car so it was already going when I stepped in. I noticed the "Passenger Airgag Off" warning light was on on the center console, even though I only had tossed my wallet and keys onto the seat. Then it shut off. OK so far.

Unfortunately at regular intervals during the drive to work the console light would again light up, then the airbag fault light in the dash panel would light up and 'ding' at me. After a few seconds the console light goes off, then the dash light does the same. At what appears to be a regular interval they go off and repeat the process again. Maybe 30 seconds tops. While parked, I went over and sat in the passenger seat. The warnings stopped.

Checked the manual and found it could be an OCS fault. Made sure nothing was under the seat (found my hammer and a receipt I was missing under there but thats it). Restarted the car and several seconds later the light show begins again.

Anyone seen this before? Ideas? Looks like I may be heading to the dealer.

I've never seen it myself, but it does sound like a dealer repair.

I had a similar problem. Was fixed with a flash update after 2 trips to the dealer. It all started when I placed a laptop on the passenger seat...

Whats a flash update? You mean like flashing the read-only memory in the computer to a newer software version?

Exactly.

I have folks do it every weekend (I work S/S/M 11-11).. The stuff cycling in your computers/controllers/'lectrical-thingys is not coded in stone, and as they say "Software doesn't break. It comes already broken."

You just have to find out how it's broken.

Maybe the seat sensor deal has a hair-trigger, and would sitting in the seat a couple of times help?
Worth a shot. Like calibrating the gas pedal, you never know till you try to divine what they were thinking when they wrote the code.

Today I put my video camera bag on the front seat (about 10 pounds) and the light came on as soon as I pulled away. Lifted the bag, light went out. Put bag down, light came on. Maybe it thinks there is a Munchkin sitting there and does not want to hurt it if the bag goes off?

No ping though. I have not checked the manual yet (bad boy).

The console light is supposed to go on and off when you put light stuff on it. Its making sure you haven't gone and put a small child in the seat and is erring on the side of caution. When you get the warning as well in the dash, thats where you have a problem.

Tried parking my keester on it a couple of times and no joy. Interestingly a rather large (200 lbs?) person sat on it the night before and may have sat down hard. Wasn't paying attention but 'jumping' into the car is pretty much what we did.

I've got an aluminum briefcase belted into the passenger seat. Inside is a terabyte worth of portable hard drives (backups for a BIG system) so its maybe 10 lbs. Solves the problem. For now. I've been told elsewhere this is a not unheard-of calibration problem in the OCS and just needs a few minutes worth of recalibration at the dealer.

As a follow-on to anyone else with this, I took the briefcase off the seat this morning. It was on all night if that matters.

Problem disappeared. For now at least.

See? it just wanted some attention :-)

terabyte worth of portable hard drives (backups for a BIG system)
Uhh, Matt? got news for you dude - a terabyte isn't 'big' anymore, heck we have almost that much in the house right now...

I touch numerous SAN's that range from several dozen TB to one last weekend
with 'well over' a petabyte - he coulda told me how much more, but I suspect then he'd a had to kill me :-)
