Default Another True CAI

I put together a CAI for my RT the other day. Since I had some materials laying around the garage it only took about an hour to complete and really didn't cost me anything. The ducting is ceramic coated. The large K&N is located where the OEM resonator was. I think it will work as well as anything out there. I have been running it for a couple of weeks with no issues and I'm happy with the results.

I am just an enthusiast but I could and possibly would be willing to build some of these if there was enough interest. I have a few pictures posted at the link below

I put it pretty much horizontal by using a short radius 90 degree elbow immediately after it went through the existing hole. I wanted to keep it as high as possible but there is some room to play with the locaton.. I wasn't thinking when I fabbed it up and didn't take a picture of the filter location. You can actually see the filter a little in picture #2 by looking through the little hole in front. It is pointed toward the drivers side front corner.

You've tested the temp in there at the elbow? Should be easy to do with a $20 thermometer from OSH or Home Depot. Get the thing in there and run it around on the road. I'll bet you find something similar to my own Typhoon road tests: You have a CAI that feeds ambient air.

And if the Typhoon feeds ambient air with a short ram, do you need that extra length of pipe to downturn it? I'll bet you can lose it.

Here's something I'm considering for my Typhoon for summer (it gets hot here). even though my tests indicated heat soak wasn't a problem after extended driving, at 100 degrees-plus I can use all the help I can get.

That stuff taped to the pipe, plus some heat wrap tape to ensure it stays on, might do it. Thermo-Tec also makes a lace-up CAI insulator that would probably be a cleaner install.

Dude...
You borrowed my idea!
Which is totally cool.
Glad some one had the time to fab one up....
Was going to do the same basic thing, except use a insulated box where the downward elbow was, one that uses a stock K&N filter, then run a duct to the lower front grill.
Let us know if your MPG increases any, and I bet that thing sound pretty good!
Nice job, real clean looking.

It is very similar. It seemed like the natural place to route it to me. It does have an awesome sound. I think that the mileage has increased for my normal driving. It's tough to keep my foot out of it long enough to see for sure though. It has to be bringing in ambient air and the extra length should tend to help low end torque a little over the shorter version. That will be difficult to prove though.

The ceramic pipe was left over from the CAI I used on my 96 Impala. It makes for a sweet setup.
