It's kind of ugly under there but no where near as ugly as the LS1 engines in the old GM F body (camaro and firebird) cars.

Yeah, it's fugly under there. At least Mopar had the sense to cover it up.

I agree, it does not look pretty under the engine cover. Excuse the dust, here is a photo.

So, is the cover just a cover? Does it serve a mechanical purpose or is it 100% aestetic?

100% aestetic, mines been sitting in my basement for about 6 months now, figure at best case all it's doing is preventing good airflow and adding a few pounds to the car.

The cover adds some intake noise damping so when you have the pedal to the floor, the intake noise from all the air the engine is sucking in isn't as loud as without the cover. Try it without the cover and hear the difference for yourself. Some folks will like the added noise, but I don't so I leave the cover in place.

ahh, didn't notice it did that, though that's because I removed it the same time I removed the intake muffler thing in the fender and put in my CAI kit so those two things made it quite a bit louder.

Here is a pic of the cover from a supercharged Grand Prix.

It takes alot of work but the finished job looks impressive....IMHO!!
