Hi; My 2006 AWD Magnum 5.7 Hemi got a knock at 287K. I picked up a 2007 5.7 Hemi and am in process of swapping over engine components. The Magnum 5.7 has MSD solenoids and the Durango 5.7 has (4) plastic deletes. Figured maybe I can run on 8 cylinders and found this recent article: https://www.hotrod.com/articles/chry...i-mds-lifters/ It ends by saying do not start the motor without first tuning out the MDS. I went to the Diablo Website and both their Tuners say not compatible with AWD Vehicles. Any suggestions on how to get around this MSD Delete? Thanks in advance. Pete

Gotta be from north jersey lol...."MDS", you got it right in the title but not in the body. MSD is either an ignition company (MSD/Multiple Spark Discharge) or Marine Sanitation Device lol. Assuming Durando = Durango, if that's what the 2007 engine came out of then it is supposed to have MDS. If it doesn't, then that engine has either been screwed with or replaced at some point. Where does it say any Diablo tuner isn't AWD compatible? That doesn't really affect the engine calibration. The engine will run just fine, you will just have a MIL (Malfunction Indicator Light, aka check eng) indicating MDS system fault. It may disable cruise control as well.
The real question is, do you want MDS? Some people like it, some don't. If you want it, then you need the correct MDS cam, MDS lifters for cylinders 1, 4, 6 & 7, four solenoids and a set of head gaskets and bolts since you have to pull the heads to replace lifters.

Hi Magnoom & thanks for your take on my situation. Yes, apparently my dyslexia kicked in with the MDS & MSD. I read up and am aware the lifters & cam are different on the MDS. I simply just want the car to run and get back on the road. I was totally unaware my Magnum has/had the MDS system until I was swapping parts from the Magnum motor to the Durango motor. Today, I pulled the MDS solenoids out and intend to simply plug them in and let them hang in midair - figured that is better then not having anything attached to the 4 connectors. I was on the Diablo website and their description page says "not compatible with AWD vehicles" - I intended to call their tech support and inquire what's up with that. The truth is, I do not want to spend another $450 (Tuner) at this point on a motor I did not see run. My Magnum is a sharp looking car, it has a Chrysler 300 front clip, kick *** stereo/entertainment system, leather interior, but if the Durango motor does not work out, I will be forced to put my daily driver Magnum up for sale and get transportation for the winter. I greatly appreciate your thoughts and advice. Pete

You can put the solenoids in the block, even hooked up they're not gonna be able to do anything because you don't have MDS lifters. Keeps them out of the way. If you wanna turn it off with a tuner, find an old Diablo U7135, I just sold one from a 2006 Charger, usually about $150 unlocked.

Does the on-screen controls in the car allow for disabling MDS??? I know the newer trucks give you that option.....

Vehicle isn't that new and even so, MDS is not a controllable option in the newer vehicles with that setup; you can turn off "ECO" mode, which isn't the same thing. Absolutely requires a tuner to turn off MDS.

Just gonna plug the solenoids off to the side, as they are not going into the block hoping to get less error codes to the check engine light. The car does not have any screen, like with a back up camera. I will look into the used tuner. Landed the motor into the car last night and now headed South, might be 2 weeks before I finish connecting motor up. Thanks again for all your suggestions/advice. Pete

Is the PCM still going to turn off the injectors to those cylinders when it thinks it should be running in MDS mode? That won't be any fun......

I believe he was referring to the Uconnect 8.4 that has all the controls and options in it.

It may try for a split second, but in the same amount of time other sensors will verify that the system isn't doing what it's supposed to be doing and throw the MIL.
