If you do find a 440cid engine, get the 440 interceptor one. It's really a bad boy of an engine! My mom had one in her town-n-county station wagon. It came off of a police auction years back. Way too much power. After the third transmission, we had it towed to a junk yard at Graiot and interstat I-94 in Marysville, MI. That yard is still there today. I'm not sure if the car is. That engine still ran, but the vehcile didn't move because of the tranny was shot.

They are getting harder and harder to find. I would buy what you can. Even the non-high performance 440s up through '71 had 350hp, same crank, etc. Was not not until the six pack version that they started beefing up rods, different cam and valve springs.

Could also go 400 route and put better heads on it.

Don't know what kind of $$ your looking to spend but P.A.W ( performance automotive warehouse) maintains a great selection of both short and long block 440 kits ranging from 1995 to 2495 includes everything but the intake manifold, exhaust manifolds, carb, valve covers, distrubitor, valve covers and front accessory pieces..does not include the water pump..have to buy these seperate....And these a re kits you do not have to trade an engine in to get them....for the money its the way to go. they also have it in brand new mopar performance kits that they sell from 4600 to 5100..give em a call at 818-678-3000 and ask for part number SPB MOP440...got over 10 thousand miles on mine and its still running fine..

There are several sources for 440's, just pick up any Mopar magazine and you'll see several engine shops offering them in several forms, even Mopar Performance has them in both cast iron and aluminium. If you plan on modifying it a boring it out alot, then you will want an older 440 from the early 70's and older as they have thicker cylinder walls. The mid to late 70's 440's have thinner cylinder walls and cannot be bored as much. Muscle Motors is another engine shop that has them ranging from mild to hold on for dear life.

71RR is right! Stay away from any block made after 6-20-74! They are no good at doing any major mods too. Plus i think the compression ratio was droped from 9.5to1 down to around 8.5to1..most of these were 220-250hp tops and they started making the blocks lighter. If you come across a 77-78 block leave it there they were the worst and the end of the line for the RB family. By far the best engines are the 66-73..there hard to come buy but there still out there....and if you just have to have it MP's new 440 service block is a must have!

They also have all aluminium 440's as well, but naturally at a higher price.

I'll agree with most of what you say, but only if one is going to leave the short block and heads untouched. I've read elsewhere that the later blocks actually have less cylinder wall thickness variance than the earlier blocks and therefore would be preferable to a vintage block if one where only looking for a bare block. No big deal to me if somebody wants to spend more for a vintage block, but I don't think it will make that big of difference if the internals are being swapped. Just my opinion, but who the heck am I?

The Six Pack/+6 440's are 390 hp, the Magnum/Super Commando 440's are 375 hp. The police motor is the same as the Magnum/Super Commando, it's the high performance 4 bbl motor.
