Default 440 6bbl Operating temperature

I am wondering what temperature I should be runnng at. My 440 6pk, bored over .030 is said to be at 525hp. I had an undersized radiator that had me running at about 210 in non stressful situations and well over 220 in slow traffic. Yesterday I installed a new aluminum radiator with built in tranny cooler, I removed the thermostat, ran water only (with an additive for better cooling), and installed a finned aluminum oil filter cover. Now I run at about 170 in non stressful situations and about 190 in non moving traffic. What is the ideal temperature for my engine?

Your in it. Sounds like there is enough heat, but not to much.

Yeah, your right where you want to be alright. My dad's Charger runs way hot and it already has a huge Be Cool aluminum radiator as well as a Mopar Performance aluminum water pump housing and an aluminum water pump. I think he needs to get an electric fan too.

wow...the timing on me finding this forum is great!!!! a good bud of mine just took delivery of a 73 challenger with a 440 six pack. couple days ago while doin the local 4th of july parade, it overheated. which has led to a minor debate over the coolant to water mixture/ratio he should have..... especially down here in orlando during the summer. the builder thinks 50-50. a good friend who has a 57 chevy lives by 75% water-25% coolant.

any more experienced suggestions, especially with the southeastern temps?? different mixture, for different seasons???

thanks

Pure water will have the best transfer of heat out of the engine for better cooling. But the antifreeze lessens the corrosion and raises the boiling point of the water. For the summer time I would go with a higer water content and a lower antifreeze content, but don't forget to change it come winter time even though it is in Florida. Also try a product called Water Wetter, it will also help to transfer the heat out of the engine and lower the operating temp.
