My day....
Just keeps getting better and better and better.
It all started at work today. An apartment complex. Sprinkler and Fire Pump tests go flawlessly. Antifreeze loop is at -60* right where it should be. We git 'r done. Then comes the rest of my job. A&D inspection (Alarm and Detection) do a pull station. Works great. Do a smoke....elevators recall. An hour goes by. Still can't figure out how to bypass the elevators. Stick the fireman's key in the fireman's bypas switch in the elevator lobby. Hit a second smoke. Still, the elevators recall. Ok, no bigge. I'll find the module that controls the recall and disconnect it. Up to the penthouse I go an dinto the elevator machine room. And what do my wondering eyes appear but banks and banks of 240 volt open contacts. "Oh, ****." I exclaim as to my own horror I realize. These elevators are bloody ancient. I find the box containing the relay/module that controls the recall, pull the cover, looks like a 24 volt module, smells like a 24 volt module. But is it? I haven't a clue. On side says 24volt the other side say pick a number between 24 and 240. Do I dare pull it out of the all metal box to find out? Nope. Wouldn't want to risk shorting something out an ddestroying th elevators. Needless to say, I finish my testing. Did I do it correctly? Nope. Couldn't, people were complaining. And my partner being from Georgia has this, can't **** people off attitude where I am from New Jersey and I say screw them. I'm not here for their convenience, they don't like it, go out or stay home take the stairs and shut-the-hell-up. I'm there to make sure they are safe during a fire and testing the recall is in fact part of my job. Though I do admit, every device re3calling the elevators is a bit excessive but hey, what are ya gonna do?
Then I come home...to ants....and lots of them. I watch the Punisher, kill more ants in between all the good parts of the movie untill it ends. Then I go get ant traps after laying paper towels soaked in antifreeze (btw, in case you were wondering, ants don't like antifreeze).
I come home with the ant traps and my CEL comes on in the car....a code 25, Idle air control motor circuits, target idle not reached (+/- 200),vacuum leak found.
This code comes in every now and again, especially this time of year and is usually a good indication that both my IAC and IAT are about to go bad. My hoses are good. 10-1 come this weekend, I can't start my car because one or both of the sensors are bad. I love how these things only last for a year. So looks like I'll be changing sensors on my sled this weekend.
Can anything else go wrong this week?
One good thing came out of this. I've got one bottle of Sam Adams Light and a half bottle of Coke and a 1/4 bottle of JD and some potato chips and some Reces Penut Butter Cups..........I'll be up for a while....

Damn dude after a day like that anyone would want to get trashed. I thought I had a bad day yesterday just because I found out its going to be a few more days before my car is done getting painted. Thats besides the fact that I bruised my ear (smashed it getting in to my car) and I had a habit of everytime I answered the phone at work I put it to that ear (OUCH!!!).
I woke up to find none of the ant traps that I put on my counter where I had found ants earlier in the evening last night.
However, the one I put on the floor was covered in the little bastards. So I moved botht the empty traps from the counter top to the floor next to the full one. Stupid ants, they don't realize they are commiting genocide.

Oh and I know the feeling with testing alarms. Try in hospitals. Or big high riises. The high rises are the worst, because of all the stuffy business people. Usually high rises are done at night though.

We tried for about 4 hours to bypass it through the fire panel. It was an FCI 7200 piece of garbage. We'd bypass it it would work for one smoke, then as soona s we'd reset the panel it would take all the bypasses out. I'm putting in my report that there needs to be bypass switches installed in the system in order for the tests to be completed properly and in a timely manner.
I'm originally from Simplex Time Recorder, so in my eyes, if a building doesn't have a Simplex panel it's crap. I spent many years working on just Simplex equipment and it is by far the best equipment out there, hence the reason why it's so expensive but it's user friendly, easy to work with and easy to navigate.
Notifier comes in a close second but I still don't like Notifier because their interfaces suck as well. Funny thing is my boss was factory trained on Notifier and I always bust his ***** about it. I seriously hate anything that isn't Simplex. I'm so tempted to give this place we were at yesterday a quote for a nice new Simplex 4100U.
